Series With Strong Female Characters

Jul 31, 2008 19:44

I wanted to make a list of series that had well written female characters that are not depicted in fanservice or Moe or just as a love interest. Please feel free to add to this or disagree!

These are in no particular order just adding as I think of them

Not as the Main Main Character but still with Prominent Roles1) The Avatar Girls ( Read more... )

x-files, anime, slayers, avatar, doctor who

1- The women of Harry Potter. I know some people disagree on a couple of the characters, but I think that for the most part it would be hard to debate against a majority of them.

And yeah, whether you love or hate the romance in New Who, none of them are there just to be a love interest. None of them (outside possibly, extremely minor characters).

I have some other ones but they're not really fandoms we share (for example, the women of Gundam Seed are just brilliant). I might add Yoko and Nia. Yoko is fanservicey and Nia definitely pleases the moe crowds, but they're both fantastic characters in their own right that serve far more of a purpose than that.

Ah yes I agree with you about the Harry Potter girls (at least Hermione and Luna). I just didn't think of that one. :)

As much as I love Gurren Lagann and Nia and Yoko as characters I don't count them because of the way Gainax portrays and markets both these characters. It's the same reason why I wouldn't count the girls from Haruhi Suzumiya.

Hmm yeah, that makes sense. They are awesome though. :)

I wouldn't really worry about that. Gainax markets Simon(http://www2.gainax.co.jp/shop/index.cgi?rm=detail&id=2031) in similar ways. :P

I am glad you appreciated it. I was even hoping it would be a good list of recommendations for people looking for series with well written female characters. :)

I've been lurking around but haven't really commented much because, well, lurking. AM FRIENDING NAO.

This list is awesome. My first thought was Yuki from Kare Kano and you have her in :)

I would have said Macross/Robotech but then some peeps would day otherwise because the romance is such a big part of the plot - still, the females have their own thing going on. I loved Lisa Hayes in Robotech when I was growing up 'cause she was not the typical heroine/damsel in distress.

Yay for Lyra! And I've noticed that the females in the Artemis Fowl books, particularly Holly, have always held their own against the males. It's hard to actually brainstorm first thing in the morning but I'll see if I can recall some animanga references...

Friending back :)

Actually I really appreciate that you introduced yourself on my journal and actually commented. I always feel weird when random people friend me and I have no idea who they are.

I never actually read the Artemis Fowl Books but they sound interesting. I should look into them.

Yeah I love Yukino, even though I am not a big fan of Arima. :D
