Navigation is the science of locating the position and plotting the course of ships, aircraft, and spacecraft; in the latter case, the proper term is sometimes referred to as astrogation.
By the mid-23rd century, the Medeusans had developed interstellar navigation to a fine art. (TOS: "Is There in Truth No Beauty?")
During this time, Hikaru Sulu

are they like, exchangeable figurines or something.
WHAT THE HELL DID CHEKOV DO ON THIS SHIP, WAS HE JUST FOR THE PRETTY?

I guess there was a reason Riley was only on for two episodes, lol. If Sulu is SO FUCKING COMPETENT he can nawigate himself

OH MY GOD EVEN WORSE:
In the novelization of the film, while confronting Kirk about how he had been able to return aboard the Enterprise, he mentions having a doctorate in astrophysics (his prime counterpart was the ship's chief of astrosciences in the pilot before becoming the helmsman in the series proper) and a master's in interstellar navigation
SO EVEN IN THE REBOOT, CHEKOV IS SUPERFLUOUS and kept around only for sexytimes.

What did Chekov do on the ship in TOS anyway? You know, other than steal the ladie's straighteners and experiment with his hair. Wasn't he the nawigator then?

Fanon says the Farragut, but he might just be "in astrometrics", like Uhura was "in communications" but not the communications officer.

he must've been a sewenteen-year-old genius at some point.
It's actually irking with my characterisation of him which I might have to revise because of this. My previous characterisation was intelligent, but no way to Chekov's standards, but hard working which made him more thorough. Although, we are assuming here that a doctorate would take the time it takes now, when in TNG children (10-12) are learning trig and complicated mathematics. Maybe it's normal to get a doctorate at 21?

w-what if, like Sulu was born with wings. Like a mutant AU or maybe he's actually not human but part alien, but the evil scientists removed them and wiped his memory and so he constantly feels a mysterious sense of loss that he cannot place and he became a pilot because he was so desperate to be in the air somehow??
And Chekov figures this out and learns how to regenerate Sulu's wings?? Though he does it with great sadness because he knows once Sulu has his ~wings~ back he will leave them all for the skies???
AND IT ENDS WITH SULU FLYING AWAY WITH CHEKOV IN HIS ARMS LIKE IN THAT AEON FLUX EPISODE??

FOR THE SKIES! *emotional ending*
Maybe Sulu's a Q? (YOU CAN'T HIDE BEHIND HOMOPHONES, Q-LU). It would explain how his fails save the planet and his general running around naked and love for old stuff.

Even if it is filled with sweet crack. It would be amazing!

Since we all know that Kirk is (suppose to be) the bamfiest bamf that has ever bamfed, he could not be overshadowed by Sulu and his 30 doctorates, 3 of which in asskicking. ENTER THE PRETTYBOI! So distracting that Sulu is thinking in which position to nail him, therefore, not thinking about the ways to use sexpollen as a weapon that would also make Enterprise go with Warp 12.
