Spoilers for 5x01 and 5x02 anonymous October 22 2012, 06:29:48 UTC

Arthur/Gwen, Arthur/Merlin (gen or slash), Canon

History repeats itself. Gwen is barren and can’t have children, so Arthur and Gwen seek out a sorcerer to help. Instead of going to Merlin they go to Mordred, who Arthur remembers knew the Druid people (but Mordred has convinced that he himself doesn't have magic).

They trade a life for a life. And the lives must be of equal value. They believe it will be Gwen and she is ready to make the sacrifice. But instead of Gwen, it’s Merlin who means the world to Arthur and he is sacrificed for the sake of Arthur’s heir.

Merlin was not a sacrifice Arthur had been willing to make.

Maybe this could explain “Arthur’s Bane” and why Merlin wasn't there in the vision of Mordred killing Arthur.

You don't have to stick to the whole prompt, but something close would be lovely.

Merlin is a warlock with the power over life and death. In this case, can't he do something to turn this fate away? (though not necessarily in a way that Arthur and the others will notice). He's powerful, there must be something he can do? I'm okay with him being dead for Arthur and the others (it'd be their own fault after all), I'm just not ok with Merlin being dead. He's given too much for them all. He shouldn't have to give his life as well for something he didn't even agree with. It's one thing if he willingly gives his life for everyone, he tries to do that all the time, it just shouldn't be ripped from him like this.. :S Any chance? Please?

Unfortunately that isn't really what the prompt asked for and subsequently not where this is going in my head :S sorry!

I don't like Merlin being dead, I like him badass and in charge wield fire and controlling dragons but the muse wants what the muse wants and I can't really see how magic would get him out of this one...

I think you're doing quite a good job on it! :)

Your descriptions of magic as marvelous, as is the way you describe Mordred's feelings about Merlin and Merlin's distrust.

I with we'd see more of Gwen's pov too, and Arthur's, to know what is really inside their head - I would have also liked to see the conversation that lead them to this decision.

I'll be waiting for more, anon! :)

Merlin tried and continued to try to convince Arthur, even Gwen to not do this. All he succeeded in doing was make Arthur furious and make Gwen cry. The more he tried the more stubborn Arthur became and the further and further Merlin felt pushed away, sent on errands only to return to find Mordred leaving the royal chambers ( ... )

Auch... I'm kinda hoping that Merlin will know before it happens and has time to say his own goodbyes. If only to Kilgharrah and his friends, maybe the druids. Maybe decide his own place to die. Maybe with Freya and Lancelot... I don't think he'll want a funeral pyre...

So I'm kinda stunned you're filling this. I really just made this prompt on a whim.

It's fantastic. Ugh so very lovely. I like how brave Gwen is being and YOUR MORDRED IS GREAT!!!! (this OP is a Merdred shipper and appreciates the feels)
