Spoilers for 5x01 and 5x02

Arthur/Gwen, Arthur/Merlin (gen or slash), Canon

History repeats itself. Gwen is barren and can’t have children, so Arthur and Gwen seek out a sorcerer to help. Instead of going to Merlin they go to Mordred, who Arthur remembers knew the Druid people (but Mordred has convinced that he himself doesn't have magic).

They trade a life for a life. And the lives must be of equal value. They believe it will be Gwen and she is ready to make the sacrifice. But instead of Gwen, it’s Merlin who means the world to Arthur and he is sacrificed for the sake of Arthur’s heir.

Merlin was not a sacrifice Arthur had been willing to make.

Maybe this could explain “Arthur’s Bane” and why Merlin wasn't there in the vision of Mordred killing Arthur.

You don't have to stick to the whole prompt, but something close would be lovely.

Oh man, what a cliffhanger! I love this, the way that Mordred's cut himself loose from the Druids' worship of Emrys, and how Merlin's helpless to change anything. Can't wait for more!

The cliffhangers just keep coming! What has Merlin done? I'm way too curious... I hope Merlin has a good and peaceful time in Avelon. He deserves it after everything, and lots the people who were 'just for him' are there... Will, Freya, Balinor, even Lancelot was Merlin's friend before he was Arthur's man. Gwaine was for me at one time on that list but then he became a knight and started acting like a knight to a servant, or so it seems to me... Lancelot never did that. Anyway, in this fic it seemed like his work and wisdom was never going to be recognised in life anyway... I really hope that he's ok wherever he is. Still strange that he can die so easily. Merlin is Emrys after all...

Did Merlin just try to make some protective charms? Really nice touch. Was he in the armoury to cast protective spells on stuff, maybe? Love this, and looking forward to more. You're painting a wonderful picture!

Oh, god... No!!! Merlin's gone now? How will Mordred explain this to Arthur? What will Arthur's reaction be when he founds out that he unwittingly sacrificed Merlin instead of Gwen? He has been so cold towards him all this time, so dismissive.
And Merlin, poor Merlin. He endured so much, had to give up everything for Arthur and destiny, only to be rewarded with death... Oh, my feelings, anon. You are killing me here! Please update soon.

WHAT???? Where is the next part? You can't leave it like this, you cruel, cruel person? You are killing us dear author...(and Merlin, God, you're a bit murderous at the moment, aren't you? :P)
Arthur will pay for his arrogance and his dismissal. It's ironic how he doesn't even realize what Merlin means to him. When he does, it'll be too late for him to repent. I wouldn't want to be in his shoes right now. Because he doesn't have anyone to blame for this but his own self.
I'm so sorry that it was Merlin who had to pay the ultimate price, again.
I hope he reacts bad. I know it's petty of me to say, but I truly hope Arthur doesn't have the happily ever after he wants. Because without Merlin, Arthur will end up like Uther. As much as I value Gwen, it's Merlin that changed Arthur, not her. It's Merlin who's Arthur's constant.
Please update soon? I'm dying here...

Oh my word.
I was desperately trying to not read this story as I'm terribly pathetic and can't do angst when there is no HEA. And there clearly isn't able to be one here with us knowing Merlin will die.
But I got hooked into this. And it's brilliant. And has me gripped. I might not survive it.
And I might cry a lot.
But thank you for writing a gripping and captivating story.

Arthur is an idiot... I can see why he is his own bane. He's so much like his father, playing with forces he could never understand. And I can't believe that Merlin is really gone now! It's so sad :'(

Brilliantly written! There is so much power in this description. I love that it's Mordred's point of view, and that he can see the effects of Merlin's magic - and his death. Wonderfully done. (Seriously, if Merlin has to go, this is how to do it. TPTB, take note!)

But you're doing a phenomenal job filling it. This is exactly what I wanted!!! I'm just having a lot of feels.

Oh I love that Arthur wasn't even there and that Mordred and everyone could feel when Merlin died.

And SO CURIOUS what the cloth is for. 8 pieces... UGH SO CURIOUS
