(and I’ve got no excuse) Arthur knows it’s a mistake to wake up the moment he opens his eyes. His room is too bright due to the fact that he forgot to close his curtains last night and there is a banging pain in his head that increases every time he blinks. Merlin and Arthur met at the young age of eleven. Their first encounter had resulted in a fight, from which Arthur had emerged the victor (no matter what Merlin claimed) and from that moment on they had been inseparable. Arthur has never been good at dealing with surprises. It’s why he makes sure he knows the details about every present he’ll get for his birthday. He finds living his life easier that way, being prepared and knowing what will come. Merlin has never paid any attention to that. In fact, Merlin had once made it his soul mission in life to catch Arthur off guard as often as he could. A feeling of dread still creeps up on Arthur whenever he opens a door ( ... )
