Arthur doesn’t really remember much about why and when - or that’s what he tells everyone, including himself. He simply recalls waking up one day, expecting his best friend to be there and then hearing from Gwen that Merlin had gone to live with his sick uncle. As if that is a logical decision to make overnight.
“Ah, I suppose it’s for the best,” Arthur’s father, Uther Pendragon, had said and Morgana hadn’t been there to say anything, as she had gone and moved away to University.
And that had been that. No note, no e-mail, no phone call and no Merlin.

“When you say you ran into Merlin…” Arthur says slowly, trying very hard to ignore the worried stare Morgana is giving him.
“I saw him and Hunith in town. I think he’s back for good.”
“Oh, right.”
Arthur stares at the sandwich and notes that he isn’t hungry anymore.
“Arthur…” Morgana sighs, but he doesn’t look up. “Are you ok?”
“Yeah, of course.” If it comes out a bit hoarse, it’s only because of the bottle of red label he downed last night. What does it matter that Merlin is back? What does it matter that he didn’t bother to call Arthur? That’s nothing new, nothing out of the ordinary. “Why wouldn’t I be?”
He forces a smile but doesn’t meet Morgana’s eyes.
“Well, if you’re sure--,” Morgana starts.
“I am fine Morgana,” Arthur interrupts as he gets up.
“In that case you don’t mind if he drops by later today?”
Arthur whips around to face her, finally meeting her gaze. There is a small triumphant smile on her lips.
“I don’t mind,” Arthur replies quickly, ignoring his heart hammering in his throat. “But I’m busy today.”
“With what?” Morgana asks incredulously, obviously not buying his lie.
“I’m meeting Gwaine in a bit.” Arthur really hopes that Gwaine will pick up his phone when he calls him in a few minutes.
Morgana narrows her eyes at him but he grabs his plate and moves towards the door before she can call him out on his bluff. Or suggest that he should let Merlin tag along.
“Thanks for the sandwich, I’m going to shower,” he calls over his shoulder, before fleeing to his room.
