Merlin wakes in the dark. He’s colder than he’s ever been, and his legs are hurting so badly he’d wish for death if he weren’t already dead. He remembers the stake, the flames licking at his skin. The fire hadn’t had time to burn him further, but his legs feel as though the skin has been flayed off them. He remembers Arthur’s face, the unreadable look in his eyes as he’d watched Merlin choke to death ( ... )

‘Oh good, you’re awake,’ Arthur says when he wakes up again.

‘Alive would be a better word, don’t you think?’ Merlin sits up with a groan and pulls Arthur’s cloak more securely around himself, shivering.

‘You’ve been gone ages,’ Arthur says, ignoring his words. As usual. ‘What took you so long?’

Merlin stares at him. ‘Oh, I don’t know. Being dead, maybe?’

‘You don’t have to be so melodramatic about it, Merlin.’

‘Melo-?’ Merlin begins incredulously, and then stops himself with a deep breath. ‘Fine. Fine. You know what? Next time I’ll just stay there. Not as though I wanted to come back to this, anyway.’

‘Fine.’ Arthur crosses his arms over his chest. ‘And you might want to keep your voice down. Unless you can’t wait to die again.’

‘It’ll be better than staying locked in here with you,’ Merlin snaps back ( ... )
