A Day on My Own in Madrid

Dec 01, 2006 11:16

I slept in a bit this morning after having a late night. I managed to get out of bed by 10:30 though. I had planned all along to spend the day visiting two of the main museums here in town - The Thyssen and The Prado. The former had decent collection of contemporary art and a lot of impressionist items but I have to say, it just didn't engage me as ( Read more... )

It's Goya's "Saturn". Basically the story is that the god Saturn was told by an oracle that one of his children would kill him. So, in his own unique brand of logic, Saturn devoured his progeny - except one, Jupiter, who escaped and later took Saturn out. Goya had a "black" period and this is one of his more famous paintings from it. I love it because it's insanely creepy (more so in person).

The first few weeks I had here in America I was completely on my own and nobody knew I was here. I had my own place to stay and money to live on. It felt downright magical to be out there exploring. I can relate to how you feel.

How's the architecture in Spain? I've heard it's FANTASTIC.

It's breathtaking Henry. I'm also documenting a ton of street art and graffiti (which is everywhere)

SIgh. I spent HOURS in front of "Garden of Earthly Delights" and Picasso's "Guernica".

I tried to get to the Thyssen, the Prado, or the Reina Sofia at least once a week while I was living there. I loved having them within walking distance.

It's SUCH a great pedestrian city. I'm sooooo happy you're there and having a great time, and sooooo jealous I can't be too :)

Dave, I had no idea you lived in Spain? Was a nodding off in E_Ticket class again?

I'm going to head to the Reina Sofia on Monday (at least that is part of my plan for Monday). I still have a bit of shopping to do and Monday seems to be a good day for it.

Wish you were here to so we could wipe our gayness on the city together.

See you soon

About a half hour outside of Madrid is a theme park called "Warner Bros. Movie World". I was on the opening team in 2002, directing a special-effects 3D show, and lived just off Puerto del Sol for about six or seven months.

Ahhh - ok, I saw a sign for it today and Mike and I had considered going but I guess it's closed tomorrow. We're going to a different park that has some interesting looking coasters and it's here in the city - not sure what it's called but Mikey would have the details.

I already told Mikey this - but I'm totally enjoying your travel posts! It helps us jealous bitches back in the states at least be able to live the experience vicariously. :0

Thanks Matty. He's showing restraint and going day by day and I'm blathering along moment by moment so between the two of us you're getting a good sense of the experience - hehe.
