A Day on My Own in Madrid

Dec 01, 2006 11:16

I slept in a bit this morning after having a late night. I managed to get out of bed by 10:30 though. I had planned all along to spend the day visiting two of the main museums here in town - The Thyssen and The Prado. The former had decent collection of contemporary art and a lot of impressionist items but I have to say, it just didn't engage me as much as I hoped it would. It might have been because I hadn't had much to eat up until that point but I think it was mostly because it didn't quite meet my expectations. I later found out that the stuff I was really looking for is housed in The Reina Sofia (the modern art museum) so I think I'm going to go there on Monday (one of the few museums that is open on Mondays. The Prado, however, was awesome. A huge collection of items and a good dozen or so that I'd seen or been engaged by over the years. Most notably The Garden of Earthly Delights and Goya's Saturn. I probably spent 20 minutes with each of them. One of the many highlights of my time in Madrid.

The third photo is the area just down from The Prado. I was walking towards the Metro station and snapped this one of the oncoming traffic through one of the many fountains. I have to say, a day on my own was just what I needed. There's something about being in a foreign city on your own that really makes you appreciate the world and your place in it.
