I saw the original On The 20th Century twice. Once with Kahn, once with Kaye. Man, that is still probably the most perfect musical theatre productions I've ever seen. Every single element seemed to come out of the same demented mind. John Cullum was only known for doing respectable leading man roles before then and when he started rolling on the floor during "I Rise Again", doing a lunatic John Barrymore impersonation people couldn't believe it was him. And it was such a different score for Cy Coleman. Robin Wagner's set was spectacular while remaining on the same level as the material. From the moment those blasts of steam shot from the orchestra pit to the ceiling during the overture it was just an extraordinary evening.
