Hunky Bohunks

Last night was fun; after work went out to Elana's for part of her reading. Ken got called in last-minute to read, just as he did for the reading of Ore. It's apparently his week for that.
During the snacks beforehand, Ken and I chatted- he recently went to Vegas with a friend of his, and the friend's online pals sent a bottle of champagne and some chocolate-covered strawberries to their hotel room with a note reading "Ken and [friend], congratulations on your committment ceremony! It's so great you're taking this next step! We love you guys." So Ken was speculating that the entire hotel staff now thought they were Gay, and the maids were probably tsking "God, we all know; they didn't have to "pretend" to use both beds".
We also talked about On the 20th Century- I mentioned it in an off-hand "You probably have never heard of this, but..." kind of way, and then discovered that he actually saw the original production!
(And then Ken E-mailed me with this link this morning...)

Reading was okay, but I had to leave in the middle of it to get to the show. Elana gave me a script so I can read the rest of it and give feedback.

Arrived at Bowery Ballroom, and John and Catherine were already there. We caught up, and eventually most everyone showed up in the lobby. Jack, Christine, Juliet, Carlo, his wife, Cem, and Liz (who was wearing a huge fake ponytail that was faboo). We all hung out there and shmoozed during the opening act, then we went upstairs to see the second act, Golem!, who rocked my atavistic Hebrewness in lovely ways. Jack had seen them before and recommended them. They're punk klezmer. The band is composed of a girl singer on accordion, a guy singer on tambourine, a violin, a trombone, a drummer, and an upright bass. Awesome. They did a beautiful sexy love duet in Yiddish- I was tempted to buy the album just for that song, but I didn't have enough money on me (and it doesn't seem to be on the new album, I think, from listening to the samples- I'll have to ask them through MySpace or something).

Lots of hot guys in the audience, too. Nothing like a hipster in a yarmulke. Mmmm.

Maeve and Donetta showed up just in time for the big act.

Finally, the act we'd come to see, Balkan Beat Box, got up to play. Now, from the website, it's hard to get an idea of what they actually look like. The answer is HAWT. It's a big sausage fest, and they're all hot in different ways. Everything I like. Mmm. They set up, then disappeared, then opened their set from the balcony behind us, carrying drums and 2 saxophones. Then they came down the stairs, playing, and crossed through the audience to get to the stage. Did I mention they were wearing pig masks? Awesome.
They officially opened the set with "Cha Cha", which is the song we all loved when we were doing Camino Real, so we all did my "Awwwww Yeah" from the show. The show was kickass. They did all the songs we liked, and some other awesome stuff, too. I started to hit the wall around Midnight, and had to go home to bed. I just hit the point of "This is awesome, but can't. dance. any. more".

on the 20th century, hotties, bands and musical artists, camino real, readings
