Far From Home
The first time he changes form, Doyle knows why his mum never wanted him to leave Ireland. "Stop here with your family," she said. "Who else can you depend on?"
She was right. Jesus, but he's got a face only a mother could love.
He's got the filthy face she gave him.
California's gorgeous, full of gorgeous people, but he walks around not looking at them, and the sight of the blue sky makes him sick. He belongs in a Dublin slum flat where the lifts stink of piss.
Later, he dials half her number, then puts the receiver down.
