Few weeks back I ecstatically posted a new CV icon - Lord Shagswell's rose. Today, I found myself wanting to pay hommage to two men, Alan Rickman (of course) and Eamon deValera - a man I only know of through Alan Rickman's portrayal of the same in the movie Michael Collins, and yet I can pick the actual man out of group pictures. I enjoyed him in that role. He has a way of making the characters he plays, real or otherwise, into people you can't seem to forget.

I think he finds the humanity in them and makes us see that even when the character is a complete flushwipe (thinking Gruber and Marston here). Eamon deValera, though, represented a real challenge for him because the movie was filmed in Ireland and there were many there who remembered the man - fondly and otherwise.

But that's why I admire him - he really IS a different character for every role - unlike some so-called actors who only ever seem to play themselves - or some variation of the same role.
