Higher Learning and
Detention. Siwon spends time catching up with the rest of the gang, and though he should be happy, he finds it to be a bit of a sad occasion.
Siwon woke for the second time in Hangeng’s bed, though he was quite thankful that Kyuhyun hadn’t decided to tie him up again while he was sleeping. He rolled onto his side from where he’d been laying on his stomach, frowning slightly when he saw that the bed was empty. He couldn’t hear any movement in the nearby rooms either. He pushed himself on up to sit on the edge of the bed, glancing over at the digital clock that sat on Hangeng’s nightstand. He blinked, bringing a hand up to rub at his eyes when he saw it was nearly four in the afternoon. He couldn’t remember when he fell asleep last, nor could he remember when he had slept so soundly. It’d been quite a while; then again his wife didn’t usually leave him so utterly exhausted either. He slid from the bed, bare feet padding across the floor as he headed into the bathroom to relieve himself and borrow Hangeng’s toothbrush to get rid of his ‘morning turned into afternoon breath’.
He stepped out of the bathroom once he was freshened up, nearly colliding with Hangeng, who he hadn’t heard come back into the bedroom. He blinked, letting his eyes roam over the Chinese man, and suddenly felt horribly underdressed. Hangeng had a pair of blue jeans on that was deep in color, a plain white t-shirt, and a black hoodie on over that. His hair had been brushed and styled, and he looked as though he was getting ready to leave, either that or he was just getting back. Siwon felt a little saddened at that, he’d enjoyed his time with Hangeng (and Kyuhyun), and wasn’t quite ready to head back to his own place, and his own bed which was cold and lonely. Hangeng snapped him out of his thoughts though, giving him a bit of a shove towards his closet.
“Pick out something to wear; I think my stuff will still fit you. Kyuhyun’s game starts in half an hour.”
Both of Siwon’s brows arched high on his forehead, glancing back at Hangeng as he stumbled towards the man’s closet. “Kyuhyun’s game?”
“Mhmm. I figured you’d want to see it. I think you’ll have fun.”
Siwon was still having a hard time remembering that the magnae was all grown up now, and as he pulled a pair of jeans and a long sleeved shirt from Hangeng’s closet he couldn’t help but to wonder what would be so entertaining about watching Kyuhyun play computer games. He pulled the clothes on, and though the jeans fit well the shirt was a bit snug, simply because Siwon was always going to be more muscular than Hangeng could ever hope to be. It still looked nice though, and before he had a chance to fix his hair in the mirror Hangeng grabbed onto his hand, dragging him on out of the room.
“C’mon, we’ll be late if we don’t hurry.” He barely gave Siwon time to slip on his shoes before tugging him on out to the car. They didn’t talk all that much during the drive, mainly because Siwon was too busy pondering why Kyuhyun needed an audience for his computer games. He blinked though when he realized Hangeng was pulling up in front of the high school, brows furrowing slightly when he drove past the main doors and into the back parking lot. There was a soccer field a few yards away, and there were already kids running about on the field, they’d apparently missed the start of the game.
“We’re watching a soccer game?”
Hangeng arched a brow, glancing to Siwon after he parked his car. He unbuckled himself and then turned in his seat, grabbing a few bags from the back seat. “What did you think we were going to do?”
“I don’t know… What’s that for?” He leaned over, peeking into the bags filled with juice boxes and kiddie sized snack foods.
“Ah, it’s my turn to bring the snacks, you’ll see.” He stepped out of his car then, waiting for Siwon to get out as well before he headed on over to the bleachers. Hangeng set the bags down carefully on the first row of seating before taking a seat on the second, and Siwon moved up to sit next to him. He wasn’t quite sure at first what all of this had to do with Kyuhyun, until he happened to spot a head of unruly, wavy hair at the side of the field. Kyuhyun was dressed in a pair of black jogging pants with a blue t-shirt that had the schools logo on it, running along the side of the field parallel to where the players in the same colored uniforms were going. He’d occasionally shout directions or words of encouragement, lifting both arms in triumph when one of the players scored.
“Kyuhyun’s coaching!?” Siwon blinked, eyes wide as he looked over at Hangeng. The Chinese man smiled, nodding.
“Yep. He’s doing a good job too! His team has won the championships two years in a row. They’ve only lost one game this year; they lost by one point in overtime. That was a REALLY good game.”
Siwon looked back to the field then, watching Kyuhyun once more. He was realizing yet again that the magnae was all grown up, and that the kids he was coaching were older than Kyuhyun was when he’d first met Siwon and the rest of the group. It made Siwon feel old, made him feel as though half of his life had whizzed right past his eyes. His depressing thoughts were interrupted by loud cheers though when the team scored yet another goal.
“I’ve missed a lot, haven’t I?” He looked back to Hangeng, frowning slightly.
Hangeng just nodded, falling silent for a moment. He was still a little bit touchy about what happened in the past, that much was obvious by the way he’d lashed out at Siwon the night before. He spoke up just as the silence was about to become uncomfortable.
“So what about the assistant coach, do you recognize him?” He lifted a hand, pointing over to the other end of the field at a man dressed in colors similar to Kyuhyun’s. Siwon turned his head to look, though at the moment he could only see the man’s back. He had short black hair hidden under a ball cap that was pulled low over his eyes, but that didn’t really help him any. Unlike Kyu’s shirt, this man’s was sleeveless, and Siwon couldn’t help but to feel jealous for a moment at how well toned and muscular the man’s arms were. Though his clothes seemed to be a bit baggy, he assumed that the rest of the man’s body was just as fit. He was still at a loss as to who it was until he saw the man kneel down, pulling up the leg of his pants slightly so he could tie his shoelaces, which were just about as bright pink as one could get.
“Oh my… Sungmin!?”
Hangeng nodded, laughing softly. “He owns a gym about twenty minutes from here, and plays on some sort of recreational soccer league. So it was only natural that Kyuhyun would pick him to help coach. They’ve been together for six years now.”
Siwon blinked once more, looking back to Hangeng. “Six? But we’ve only been split up for five.”
“So? That doesn’t mean anything. They just didn’t want to say anything to you about it before. They were afraid it’d make you uncomfortable, considering what happened between us.”
“But… you and Kyuhyun… the three of us this morning…”
Hangeng laughed once more, a bit of a smirk slipping over his lips. “Sungmin’s not all sweet and innocent, Siwon. Sungmin started it all, really. If you think Kyuhyun is bad, wait until you get the two of them together. They’d suck you dry, literally AND figuratively. I learned the hard way only to play with the both of them together when I don’t have anything at all to do for the next few days.”
Siwon was about to say something in response when a little boy, no more than five, came rushing up to the bleachers, scrambling over the first one before practically flinging himself at Hangeng. Thankfully Hangeng had been paying attention, sticking his arms out in more than enough time to catch the boy, almost as if he’d been expecting it. He hauled the boy into his lap then, hugging him close as the boy looped arms around his neck and squeezed.
“Appa said you were bringing snacks this time. You didn’t bring carrots like Sungmin did last time, did you? I don’t like carrots.”
Hangeng laughed softly, leaning down to grab one of the bags, holding it open so the boy could look in it. “Let’s see, I brought some apple slices, and some crackers, and some animal cookies too”
“Can I have animal cookies? Please?”
Hangeng took out the animal cookies and opened up the bag, holding it so the boy could reach inside and grab a handful. Siwon was about to speak again, but another voice interrupted him, though this one was much higher pitched.
“Appaaaaaa… I want cookies too!”
“I see how you are. Love me until Hangeng shows up with his animal cookies. Just because he gets the ones with icing and sprinkles…”
Siwon blinked, looking over to the man whose voice he’d heard, eyes widening a bit. “Kangin?”
Kangin looked up after setting a rather adorable looking three year old girl down on the other side of Hangeng so she could get her fair share of cookies. “Siwon? Hey!” Kangin’s eyes nearly closed as he smiled, same as they always done, and he reached out to wrap his arms around Siwon in a big bear hug. “How’ve you been?” He dropped down to sit next to Siwon after letting go of him. Siwon couldn’t help but to grin, laughing as he looked to Kangin.
“Not as busy as you, apparently. I heard you got married, didn’t know you had kids though. How’d that happen?”
“Well you see, when a man and a woman love each other…” Kangin laughed; even as Siwon reached up to lightly hit his arm.
“You know what I meant.”
“Actually… we didn’t get married until three months before Jun was born. He wasn’t exactly planned. But things have been good. They’re good kids. Jun will be five in four months, and Sun-ye just turned three.”
“They’re cute.”
“Of course! Look who their father is.” Kangin grinned, but both Siwon and Hangeng rolled their eyes. Kangin leaned back a bit then, looking to Hangeng who was now balancing Jun on one knee and Sun-ye on the other. “Anyone else here yet?”
“Not yet, you know they like to be fashionably late.”
“Serves them right if they don’t get any cookies then.” Kangin snatched the bag with a grin, taking a few out before handing it to Siwon.
“So, what do you do, Kangin?” Siwon took a few of the cookies from the bag before handing it back to Hangeng.
“I thought I’d do the whole MMA thing, you know? Trained really hard and all of that, but in my third match I wound up with a broken leg and a concussion, so I gave up on that. I’ve been working on a few movies lately, indie stuff. It’s fun. You still with your dad’s company? I bet it keeps you busy.”
Siwon nodded, munching on one of the cookies. “It does. It’s beginning to feel like I don’t even have time to live my own life.” And the more he thought about it, the more he realized just how much he was missing out on. He couldn’t even remember the last time he watched a sporting event on TV, let alone got go actually see one in person. The squeal of another child snapped him out of his thoughts in time for him to see a four year old dart past the bleachers with someone chasing after him (slowly of course, because four year old legs couldn’t go very fast), fingers wiggling as his arms flailed about in the air.
“The tickle monster is coming! I’m going to get you!”
Siwon blinked once, then twice as he watched the man pass by and continue on chasing after the boy who was howling with laughter by then. “…was that Donghae?”
Hangeng snickered and nodded. “He spends more time playing with his son than he does watching the game, really.”
Siwon smiled, leaning back a bit to look around Hangeng and watch Donghae chase his son about. “I bet he’s a good dad.”
“He is now. When his son was first born, he went through one hell of a depression though. Being a dad reminded him a lot of his own dad, and how much he still missed him. It was really hard for him at first, but he got over it. Now he not only has a son, but a playmate.” Hangeng snickered, shaking his head a bit. “I don’t envy his wife at all. She’s a brave lady, taking care of two boys, and another one on the way.”
“Two boys? Oh… Donghae…” Siwon snickered then, shaking his head. “What does Donghae do?”
“He works as a choreographer now. You know that new Solbi video? He did the dance stuff for that one, and he’s done a few SHINee videos too.”
“What about Eunhyuk? The two of them use to be inseparable.” Siwon reached over, snatching a few more cookies from the bag when the two kids in Hangeng’s lap weren’t looking.
“Oh they still work together from time to time. Eunhyuk’s still working for SM, helping to train all the new recruits. Donghae tried to do that for a little while, but new kids need discipline, and Donghae still needs disciplined, so that didn’t work out all that well.”
“What about the rest of the guys?” Siwon had thought he’d done a decent job of keeping in touch with everyone, but he was realizing now that he hadn’t. Though he still chatted with them from time to time, he was usually so rushed with his own work the conversations were usually limited to quick hellos and ‘how are you doing’, nothing deep and important like ‘what’s changed in your life?’. He’d always promise to call again when he had more time, but up until now that time had never come.
“Ryeowook and Henry have been working together a lot, doing a lot of composing and all of that. They’ve even performed with a few orchestras. Kibum’s already filming his third movie this year; he’s got two more lined up after that. Heechul’s clothing line is supposed to debut this fall. Shindong’s been co-hosing Star King, and they’re saying he’ll probably take it over completely when Ho Dong retires next year. And Yesung has some TV show with his turtle.”
Siwon blinked, looking at Hangeng oddly. “Do what?”
Hangeng laughed, looking back at Siwon. “He and his turtle have a TV show. It’s a kid’s show, some nature type thing. It’s kinda like that Crocodile Hunter show from years ago, only Yesung doesn’t go chasing after anything that might chase him back. Come on, you didn’t expect him to ever have a serious job, did you?”
Siwon couldn’t help but to laugh at that, shaking his head. “No… you’re right. What about Leeteuk?”
Hangeng was about to open his mouth to speak, but he was interrupted by someone setting a baby carrier down on the bleachers (very gently, of course), a rather precious looking angel in a pink romper sleeping quite soundly. “Leeteuk hasn’t slept in two days, and his wife hasn’t slept in four.” Leeteuk dropped down to sit next to the baby carrier, though he turned sideways so he was able to look at the guys.
Hangeng grinned, nudging the bag of snacks towards the exhausted looking former-leader before looking back to Siwon. “Leeteuk’s still hosting his own radio show at night and dealing with a fussy baby during the day.”
“She has more energy than I ever remember having. She’s awake when I’m awake, and she’s awake when I try to sleep too. She waits until I give in and decide to get up and stay up before she goes to sleep.”
Hangeng laughed again, nudging Leeteuk’s leg slightly with his foot. “That’s what you get for naming her Angel. You should have named her Brat, and then she would’ve been a good girl.”
Leeteuk rolled his eyes but laughed softly. “She’s only being nice now because she wants to show off for all of you guys. I’m sure the minute we leave she’ll start fussing again.”
Kangin laughed, reaching down to place his hands on Leeteuk’s shoulders, kneeing at the tired muscles. “Maybe she’s just a soccer fan? Maybe she’ll go to this school when she gets older and Kyuhyun can coach her and she’ll become a famous soccer player and you can take all the credit for it.
Siwon blinked, lifting his eyes back to the field, having completely forgotten that there was a game going on, though judging by the scoreboard it wasn’t much of a game at all. Kyuhyun’s team was completely dominating the others. They were so far ahead Kyuhyun had quit running around, and was instead standing by Sungmin’s side. They didn’t seem to be an overly lovey dovey couple, not in public anyways, though by the way Kyuhyun’s hand had moved to rest against the small of Sungmin’s back, there was a definite fondness there. Seeing that saddened Siwon yet again though. While he never hesitated to say he loved his wife, he was beginning to wonder just what kind of love it was. When he thought about it, he realized that they were more like friends who happened to sleep in the same bed and wear matching rings. He was beginning to realize that maybe; just maybe, he’d gotten married for all the wrong reasons, though at the time it’d seemed like the right thing to do.
It seemed that, even though he’d told Hangeng five years ago that he needed to move on with his life and quit doing such childish and immature (and immoral) things, he had been the one that had never moved on. He felt like he was stuck in a rut, while everyone else had moved on with their lives and made something of themselves. They were teachers, actors, and dancers, loving husbands and devoted fathers, yet every time he was introduced to someone for work it was still ‘and this is our CEO’s son…’, not Choi Siwon.
Siwon was beginning to realize that maybe he should have listened to his heart five years ago, not his parents.
A/N: So this wound up being a bit more angsty than I had originally intended, but it serves its purpose. Also, I apologize for the G rating considering the other two were NC-17, but I'm using this as a bit of a transition into the Kyu-Min I have planned next. I'm not sure if I'll continue it after the next installment or just let it end at that, let me know what you think/would like for me to do.
Also, for those of you who would still like to participate in the Jade Dragon guessing game, I'll be putting the next chapter up tomorrow night, so you will have until then to place your guesses, and I will announce the winners when the chapter goes up as well.
