Summary: Hyun-ok plans to run, but nothing ever works out as planned.
Kangin had never actually seen what happened to Hyun-ok after she drank Leeteuk’s tea. Not immediately anyways. He’d seen her sleeping; she’d always seemed to be resting peacefully. But seeing her how she was now, so limp and unresponsive, he felt horribly guilty. He bit down on his lower lip, creeping forward to peer down at her over Hangeng’s shoulder.
“Should we take her to the hospital?”
Siwon shook his head, frowning as he looked over the sleeping woman. “I have no idea how she got in to Korea, but I doubt it was legal. She’d be reported. And if the police already have her in their database and her name comes across, she’s done for.” He sat on the bed on her other side, reaching out to press his fingertips to one of the pulse points on her neck. “She’ll be alright I think… but she didn’t finish all of that tea. If she had… she probably wouldn’t have woken up.”
Kangin frowned once more, stuffing his hands into his pockets. “I’m going to go talk to Leeteuk…” He headed off then, before anyone else had much of a chance to respond. Leeteuk was still in the kitchen, various food items spread out over the counter top, getting ready to cook everyone a late dinner. Seeing him act as if nothing was amiss made Kangin’s frown deepen, and he opened up the cabinet where Leeteuk had put the tea, grabbing the bag of white powder. Leeteuk looked up from what he was doing, pausing mid-slice, the chef’s knife still held tightly in his hand.
“What are you doing?”
“I should be asking you the same question, Leeteuk! Are you fucking TRYING to kill her?” He moved over to the sink and turned the faucet on. He was well aware what the street value of the drugs in the bag was. He could’ve easily gone out and resold them. Instead he turned the bag upside down over the sink, dumping the powder in, letting the water wash it down the drain.
“Kangin! I told you it helps her sleep! What are you doing?” He made a move to grab the bag away from Kangin, but by then it was already empty. Kangin frowned, turning around to face Leeteuk.
“There’s one hell of a difference between asleep and unconscious, Leeteuk! She didn’t fucking fall asleep, she passed out!”
“Well maybe if you hadn’t tried to bust her head open…” It was Leeteuk’s turn to frown then, one hand coming to rest on his hip. “She could have a concussion for all you know!”
“Right… why don’t you go and try to explain that to her brother. Explain to him why she was perfectly fine until she drank your tea. Explain to him why it’s not really your fault even though Kibum says she passes out like that every time you make her tea.” Kangin crumpled the bag up, leaning to the side to toss it in the waste basket.
“Well how does Kibum know… wait… what? Her brother?” Leeteuk blinked a few times, the anger fading from his face only to be replaced with confusion. “What does her brother have to do with any of this?”
“That guy in there that you had me all worked up about? That’s her brother. And to top it all off, he’s a fucking cop. So you go in there and explain to the cop why you doped his sister up.”
Leeteuk realized he didn’t have a good response to that, and realized he’s very lucky he wasn’t already in handcuffs. He bit his lower lip, turning back to the food he was preparing, beginning to chop again.
“Why is he here?”
Kangin slid into the chair at the table he’d occupied earlier, sighing softly as he slouched down. He brought one hand up, rubbing it over his close-shaven head. “She killed someone in Beijing when she was younger, before she came here. They never caught her, they thought she died actually… they closed the murder case because they weren’t able to solve it. But now someone’s sending them information on her… photos… everything. So her brother said they’ve reopened the case, that they’re looking for her. It’s someone from Korea sending them information.”
“He’s not here to arrest her?”
“No. He said he came to try and give her a head start in escaping again.”
Leeteuk slid the onion he’d chopped into a bowl, moving on to some carrots. “What are you going to do?”
Kangin sighed once more, slumping forward to let his elbows rest on the table. “I don’t know… I just… I don’t know.”
The rest of the guys seemed to adjust rather well to having two policemen in the house, once they realized they were there to help Hyun-ok and not haul her off. Granted, they weren’t going to go volunteering information in their conversations with Hangeng and Siwon, but they weren’t treating them cruelly either. Hyun-ok had woken up sometime early the next morning, finding Hangeng sleeping sitting up in her bed, shoulders and back resting against the headboard. Siwon had fallen asleep in a chair in the corner of her room, and Donghae had sprawled himself out on the foot of her bed. It’d taken her a good five minutes to figure out how to crawl over Hangeng and Donghae to get untangled from her blankets and out of bed. The movement had woken Hangeng, but she told him she was only going to the restroom, that she’d be right back.
She did go to the restroom, but instead of heading on back she headed down the hall, bare feet making little noise on the cold wooden floor. She stepped into the kitchen as she brought a hand up to rub the sleep from her eyes. She was a little hungry, since she’d slept through dinner the night before. She had thought she’d just grab some fruit and head back to her room, but was rather surprised to find Kangin sitting at the table, still in the clothes he’d had on the night before. She blinked, wiping at the corners of her eyes once more as she looked over at him.
“You didn’t go to bed?”
He lifted his eyes to look at her a moment before shaking his head, a frown still upon his lips. He’d made himself a pot of coffee, the fingers of one hand curled around the mug that he’d filled with the black liquid. He’d taken a few sips, but other than that the coffee had been untouched. Hyun-ok took a cup from the cabinet, pouring some coffee for herself before she moved to the table, taking a seat next to Kangin.
Kangin couldn’t help but to think not all the memories he’d had with Hyun-ok had been bad ones. She certainly wasn’t the touchy-feely type, but now Kangin understood why. But there had been times before when they could sit like they were now and talk. She’d never really laughed much at the things he said, she never pretended to be all that impressed with the things he did either… but she’d always been a good listener. Either that or she was good at tuning Kangin out and just pretending she was paying attention. He still had feelings for her, but he’d done enough thinking throughout the night that no matter how much he might want it, she just wasn’t the right girl for him. The things in her past kept her from letting go and opening up, but now that he knew what’d happened, he didn’t blame her.
They sat in silence for a moment, Kangin only remembering to drink from his cup of coffee when he saw Hyun-ok bring hers to her lips. Though she’d never been one for conversation before, she was the first one to speak this time, though she kept her eyes on the black liquid swirling in the blue cup she held.
“They’ll eventually find me, you know that don’t you?”
Kangin nodded, fingers curling a bit more tightly around his own cup. “That doesn’t mean you have to give up. Eventually doesn’t have to mean tomorrow. You’ve managed to stay out of their grasp this long… why not try to extend your record a little further?”
She couldn’t help but to chuckle softly, a bit of a sad smile gracing her lips. “I don’t have anywhere else to go, Kangin. I only wound up here because your brother likes to collect people like old women collect cats.”
“We have family in Mokpo. You could go there.”
She looked over at him then, blinking slowly. “Don’t you think it’d be a little weird for them just to have some white chick show up on their doorstep?”
Even Kangin had to laugh a bit at the thought, shaking his head slightly. “Donghae’s wanted to go back. I don’t think he ever really liked it here that much.”
Hyun-ok blinked once more, tilting her head to the side. “You want me to go with Donghae?”
Kangin bit his lip briefly before forcing himself to take another sip of the coffee, which seemed to become more bitter the more it cooled. “Wouldn’t you want to? Look, I’m sorry for what I did before, okay? I know sorry doesn’t fix it, but just… sorry. I can’t leave here anyways… things to take care of you know? But Donghae’s not doing anything and he wants to go back… and like you said, they wouldn’t know what to do if a white girl showed up at their house alone. I want you two to go. I know the police will probably catch on eventually, but it will buy you some time at least.”
Hyun-ok smiled at that and leaned over, pressing a barely-there kiss to Kangin’s cheek. “You’re not all bad, you know that? You’ll take care of yourself, won’t you?”
“Of course, I have too many things to do here; I can’t give up so easily.” He had to say it that way, no matter how much he really just wanted to drink a strong cup of Leeteuk’s tea and crawl into bed. He started to loop his arm around her and pull her into a tight hug, but he decided against it. She was having one of those moments when she being rather nice and he didn’t want to ruin it. Instead he lifted his hand, patting her shoulder lightly.
“I’m going to miss you…” He meant it of course, but he meant it far more than words alone could convey. Without her there the house would feel empty, no matter how many people he passed in the halls. He wished he could beg her to stay, but that would be foolish. He knew she needed to go.
She laughed softly, looking back to her coffee. “You won’t. It’ll be like a little vacation for you… all the peace and quiet. You’ll have to get one of those little yappy dogs or something…”
Kangin laughed as well, finally letting go of his cup of coffee. “Maybe. I’ll go talk to Donghae, alright? Let him know what’s going on.” He slipped away before Hyun-ok could say anything else, mainly because he was trying to be strong and it felt as though if he stayed five minutes more he’d wind up crumbling right in front of her.
The guys were all sad to hear of her impending departure, but they all understood why she was going. It would’ve been rather foolish for her to wait for the authorities to come get her, no matter how good of a fighter she thought she was. She would have been risking all of their lives if she had stayed, and though Hyun-ok could be cold-hearted more often than not, she wasn’t that selfish.
“So you’re really leaving us tomorrow?” Kyuhyun frowned, folding up some of Hyun-ok’s t-shirts before placing them into one of her bags.
Hyun-ok nodded from where she knelt on the floor, rummaging through the sea of things she’d managed to collect over the years, most of which she’d forgotten she had. “Donghae left yesterday, just to make sure everything was okay in Mokpo.”
“It won’t be the same without you here…” He folded the last of her clothes, tucking them into the bag before zipping it up. Hyun-ok laughed softly, looking up at him.
“You all keep saying that like it’s a bad thing. Like I haven’t terrorized you all.”
Kyuhyun shrugged, moving to sit on the edge of her bed. “We’ve gotten use to it. Are you sure you don’t want to stay? You don’t even know if they’ll come. We could just lie and say you don’t exist. You’re suppose to be dead anyways.”
“Suppose to be… but someone apparently took pictures proving otherwise. Maybe I’ll come back some day, you know? Maybe after they look around here and see I’m not here they’ll move on, and then I can come back.” She pushed herself up to stand then, moving to sit on the edge of the bed next to Kyuhyun. “You guys will be alright without me here. It’ll be better; you know that as well as I do, Kyu.” She leaned to the side then, bumping his shoulder with hers. “You might actually be able to win your computer games without me around. You won’t be second best anymore.”
“Baahh. You’re not THAT good. Just cause you’ve won once or twice… or ten times, but that’s beside the point.” He nudged her back before he stood, taking hold of her wrist to tug her up. “You owe me one more game. And if I win, you stay.” He didn’t give her much of a chance to protest, dragging her out of her own room and across the hall into his. They nearly collided with Heechul, but Heechul managed to step out of the way just in time. He opened his mouth to speak with Hyun-ok, to wish her luck and all of that, but Kyuhyun shut his door before he got the chance.
He shook his head, knowing if the two were having another one of their game battles they’d be in there for at least an hour, probably two. He headed on down the hall, pulling his phone from his pocket when he felt it begin to vibrate. He put it to his ear without glancing at the caller ID.
“Hello?”
His brows furrowed as he listened to the person on the other end, a rather worried look spreading on his face. “What? Y…You’re joking right?! This isn’t funny…” The person on the other end spoke some more, but Heechul wound up closing his phone without responding, rushing down the hall. Most people would have knocked on Kangin’s door before barging in, but Heechul didn’t bother. Nor did he care that Leeteuk was half naked and in Kangin’s lap on the bed. Both Leeteuk and Kangin’s heads whipped about to look at the door, and Kangin was fully ready to lash out at whoever had bothered to interrupt them, but upon seeing the look on Heechul’s face he knew the other hadn’t come just to chat. He practically shoved Leeteuk from his lap (though he didn’t mean to) and scrambled from the bed.
“What happened? What’s wrong?”
“Donghae… he’s been arrested. They picked him up at the train station in Mokpo last night. They’ve already raided your grandparents’ house. But they were waiting for Donghae at the station; they grabbed him as soon as he got off the train, Kangin. They knew… They knew everything, even which train he’d be on.”
Kangin’s frown deepened, fingers curling into his palms to form fists. Heechul continued, speaking the exact words that Kangin was thinking.
“Whoever it is that sent all that stuff on her to China… it’s someone here, in this house.”
A/N: This didn't quite come out how I wanted it too. It all sounded good in my head today, and then when I got around to writing it, it just didn't want to come out right at all. Anyways!! I've decided to have a little bit of a contest. I think there are enough clues throughout the whole story you may be able to piece together who the nark is that's spilling all the details about Hyun-ok. In fact there's a rather big clue in one of the previous chapters, but I'm not saying where because I'm mean like that. So, for any of you who think you know, or anyone who thinks they are a lucky guesser, if you comment with the person who you think is ratting Hyun-ok out to the police and you're correct, I'll write you a oneshot of your chosing. I won't just pick one winner either, so everyone who gets it right will get something. My only rule is that you just make one guess. It wouldn't be fair to make a guess with everyone's names in it. The suspect will be revealed in the next chapter, and that's when things will really begin to take off (hopefully). Thanks to all of you who've been reading and commenting, I appreciate it!
Contest is over guys! Thanks to everyone who participated.
