Jared was busy in the kitchen when he heard the front door open. Cursing as his heart leapt into his throat and beating a mile a minute he glanced frantically around at what was meant to be a nice dinner for him and Jensen, but which was looking something closer to an apocalyptic war zone. Cooking had never been one of Jared’s strong points, but he really wanted tonight to be special and he was trying real damn hard to cook for the man he loved. Of course the almost unbearable nerves running through his system so strongly that his hands refused to stop shaking were not helping in the least.
“Fuck” he muttered and turned off the heat under the pan he was trying to fry some greens in. They weren’t lookin’ so green anymore though and he scowled at them angrily.
“Jen? That you” he called through the house, a slightly desperate edge to his voice. “Don’t come into the kitchen yet man, please” he added hastily, not wanting Jensen to see his disaster zone.
Jared squawked as Jensen’s head popped around the kitchen door, his eye’s going wide at the sight in front of him. “Jay?”
“Shit, Jen, no not yet man please,” Jared begged as he flew to Jensen and grabbed him by the shoulders, turning him back toward the living room, “here” he said as he push/guided Jensen to the couch and pushed him down onto it from behind the sofa. His hands still on Jensen’s shoulders, “I’ll grab you a beer and you can watch...” Jared finally let go of Jensen and grabbed the remote, flicking the channels till he found a game they hadn’t seen yet, “... the game.”
“Jay,” Jensen insisted, voice tight with the worry he couldn’t displace. “Come on man, what’s going on, can’t we talk, I think we need to talk, yeah?” Jensen was half way off the couch again when Jared grabbed his shoulders, this time from the front and pushed him down onto the couch again. He followed Jensen down, his knees hitting the carpet in front of Jensen, he slotted down into the space between Jensen’s knees, hands holding tight to his shoulders and looked directly into Jensen’s amazing eyes, god he loved those eyes. He could see himself getting lost just looking into them now that he was allowed to do things like that with Jensen. First things first though, he had to assure a very nervous looking Jensen that everything was going to be just fine if only he could get this damn dinner finished without blowing up the kitchen.
“Please Jen, just give me a little longer yeah? I just need to finish in the kitchen, I’m trying to cook you dinner, but it’s not going so well...” Jared bowed his head sheepishly. “My Momma’s sick of me today I’ve called to ask her questions so many times...” he added with a grin and looked up into Jensen’s face again.
Jensen couldn’t relax though, not with Jared so close but still not telling him if there was any chance at them being... well them. And he really didn’t care about food right now, of course if his brain wasn’t so tied up on the whole, might be about to lose my best friend thing, he would have appreciated just what Jared trying to cook for him might mean. Cause Jared was a fuckin’ terrible cook and you nearly had to threaten his family to get him to make toast. “Yeah sure, whatever” he muttered though, still stuck on the ‘no answers’ thing. “Not like I haven’t been waiting for years, what’s some more time tearing myself up inside, you go cook” he couldn’t help the bitterness in his voice, though it was caused by fear more than malice of any sort.
“Jen look at me” Jared murmured, his fingers moving from Jensen’s shoulders to wrap warmly around his neck. He waited until Jensen’s gaze met his and gave him a small smile. “Jen, I... I’m here Jen, all of me, with you, and there is no where I’d rather be, I just need a moment please. I really want to cook you dinner, I want it to be special, perfect even but it’s not really going as plan. Let me make it special for you? Please” he pleaded with Jensen softly, searching his eyes for understanding and belief. He leaned in before Jensen had a chance to answer and kissed him gently on the cheek, giving his neck a squeeze before he stood up and hurried back to the kitchen, praying the steaks weren’t ruined by his time containing Jensen to the lounge room.

Jensen touched his cheek softly where Jared had kissed it, his neck still tingling from the warm touch. His heart was racing and he didn’t know whether to laugh or break down and sob, it was all too much for him to take. So he did the only thing he could think of that didn’t involve Jared working out what a basket case he was. He texted Chris.
He’s cooking me dinner, said he was all here with me. What does that mean? He kissed my cheek, do friends kiss on the cheek or do you think that he meant more than that? I’m freaking out man...
He sat and stared at the TV willing his phone to beep at him, not paying any attention to the game and jumping every now and then at the loud noises and cursing coming from the kitchen. He smiled then, couldn’t help himself, Jared was cooking for him!
He loves you, you dick, now stop texting me and be happy, then go have lots of butt sex with your stud of a man, love ya man. And congrats (bout time)
Jensen laughed and shook his head, fuckin’ Chris, best friend a man could have but a complete asshole too. However the whole butt sex idea was something Jensen was not terribly against if he was honest... you know if Jared was interested that is. Holy Shit! his brain yelled at him, was he actually, maybe, possibly going to get to have sex with Jared? Jensen’s brain shorted out and he lean back on the couch trying to will himself not to get hard right now. It wasn’t easy, he was pretty sure all Jared would have to do was touch him... anywhere and he’d come completely apart and then he’d have to change his name and move to Bolivia and raise goats. Because he would never be facing Jared again after embarrassing himself like that thank you very much! Christ on a pogo stick, what was he gonna do if Jared did want to have sex, FUCK what if he wanted to do it tonight? Jensen was so not ready for that shit, he needed time to prepare his brain for that shit man...
“Jensen!” Jensen’s doomsday butt sex thoughts were broken into by Jared’s loud shout from the kitchen and he pulled himself up and shook his head. Heading toward the dining room and maybe the rest of his life.

Jared looked down at the table and smiled, it wasn’t exactly what he had pictured in his head, but it was the best he could do, so that was what counted right? The steak was a little over cooked, he knew Jensen liked it rare, the green beans where no longer so green, but thanks to what his Momma had said about garlic and mint, they smelt like they would taste pretty damn good. His mash was soft and fluffy looking (he was privately very proud of his mash) and it had cheese melting nicely over the top of it. The corn bread he’d tried to make however had not been so lucky, it was now living a fine life at the bottom of the trash can. Burnt and black, apparently when he’s Mom had told him not to forget about it in the oven she had really meant it. His gravy had not worked out either... not even a little bit, no matter how many times he read his Momma’s recipe. So he had had to resort to the gravox he found deep in the pantry. But it was smooth, thick and hot in a jug on the table near the two plates. A bottle of red wine was open and ready to be poured into the two glasses that stood beside the plates. Two candles burnt in the middle of the table and Jared had dimmed the lights right down. He was now standing beside the table facing the door waiting only completely nervously for Jensen to join him.
“You rang?” Jensen said as he came in, a careful smile on his face. A face that quickly turned to some mix of awe and shock that Jared decided suited him really well. “Jared...” Jensen whispered as his eyes flowed over the table and the dinner and then back to Jared. “God... I don’t know what to say” he said, his voice shaky and he looked close to tears.
Jared crossed the room and pulled Jensen into his arms and held him tight to his chest. “Say you’ll be mine, that you really meant it when you said you still loved me this morning...” Jared whispered into Jensen’s hair where his nose nuzzled, pulling the other man even closer.
“Fuck” Jensen breathed, “Is this really happening?” He choked out.
“Yeah it is, if you really want it too” Jared replied softly, pulling back to look at Jensen.
“Yes! God yes I want it, have for so long Jay...” Jensen looked up into Jared’s face, a small grin turning the corner of his lips. He then did the only thing he could, he grabbed Jared’s neck and pulled him down and kissed him. Soft and gentle and like coming home, they just fit, simple as that, and Jensen knew as soon as he felt Jared return the kiss, that this was right where he was meant to be, the only place he’ll ever need to be again. “I love you” he whispered into Jared’s mouth.
Jared gasped and leaned into Jensen, kissing him back, passion he didn’t even know he had inside him filling him up and putting to rest any lingering doubts he might have had that this, Jensen, was the one he wanted to be with. He really was in love with a man... and he was totally ok with that. The smile he pressed to Jensen’s mouth was the happiest he thought he had ever given when the older man whispered that he loved Jared.
“I love you too Jen” he murmured back before kissing him once more and pulling back, grabbing his hand and pulling him to the table. “Lets eat!”
