Grump, grump, grump... Not having a good day so far! I phoned the US embassy this morning to make an appointment to renew my American passport. They disconnected me, or lost me in the transfer system 7 times!!! And when I finally got through to a human being it turns out I can't come in and drop off a passport application, I have to post it, which ( Read more... )

Bummer. How come you can't just travel on the Australia one? Why do you need to renounce the American one first?

I can't travel on the Australian passport because I have American citizenship, and if you are an American citizen you have to enter and leave America on an American passport. They can't give me an American passport in time for me to travel these holidays, so I asked if I could give up my American citizenship so I could travel on the Australian passport, but no...

ahem
did you think of travelling on your Ozzie passport without mentioning your dual citizenship? (or did you worry you'd get caught? I mean, couldn't you then say your passport had expired and you had no idea of this ridiculous rule (and it is ridiculous - I have dial French/Swiss citizenship and use whichever passport I bothered to renew before leaving; no probs at all)? I know ignorance of the law is no defence, but this is a bit of an absurd piece of legislation...

nb: my kids do have three passports (not that I have been renewing each religiously because it is expensive, ok?) and I assume your poppet must be in line for a handful too, no?

ps: hi! It's been an age!!

I did think of that, and had it been Europe I'd have done it, but America is not so relaxed about these things and would not hesitate to deport me. Not willing to risk it sadly... We'll go another time, when I've either renounced my American citizenship or renewed my passport.
Not sure that Maddi is eligible for an American passport through me actually, I don't think I lived there long enough to pass it on. They have rules about how long you must live there for your kid to inherit your American - ness, and I was only there till I turned 3.
And yes it has been forever since I've seen you or tarte! I'm back in September, so we should all meet up.
