The notion that mirroring someone can be threatening certainly matches with my martial arts experience. The name of the style of kenjutsu I practice translates to "heart reflection style", and we do a great many things that depend on matching an opponent move for move, then shifting that pattern to our advantage. In aikido, there is also this idea of matching, and pretty much every technique has an interval in which one is moving in contact with one's partner along exactly the same arc.
It seems to me that synchronization is how we entrain ourselves to someone and also them to us; it is a way of building rapport, which can be used for good or ill. The mimic, by controlling the degree of rapport, establishes a greater degree of control of the relationship.
