In town they always find her.
She tells them she'll roam the tunnels or do her homework or just sit and doodle and munch icecream at the usual spot - but they always ignore where she says she'll be and come to find her anyway. It's frustrating, really.
So instead she sits at the beach. She listens to the train's click and hum as it stitches the tracks behind her. She wiggles her toes into the sand and dreams of watermelon crunches and friendships that never end.
I knew I'd find you here.
The sun blinds her, twilight glowing past her eyes in bright leaves and summer's end and lamps that fade in a boy's golden hair - an almost-voice. Not Hayner's triumphant crow, not Pence's apologetic aftertones or silly imitations. Not even Seifer, though sometimes he's quiet, almost nice. Not Fuu, not Rai. Not anyone.
Just familiar.
She closes her eyes. She twists strands around her fingers and pretends that someone's tugging her hair. She laughs and throws sand since she doesn't have small black seeds to spit. She holds an imaginary icecream out to an expectant hand.
"Olette!"
They always find her. She dusts the sand off her knees, licks the last few drops of seasalt from the corners of her lips. Hayner laughs and teases and punches her shoulder like always. Pence holds out a pretzel - like always, but there's something wry about his mouth, and she wonders if maybe this time he brought four - before running towards the ocean, sandals flopping, Hayner in close pursuit. She walks behind, watching the familiar color of the sun. Her fingers curve to clasp nobody else's.
"I knew I'd find you here."
