[Survey] - It is like research, okay?

Aug 24, 2009 15:37

[Just in case, but massive massive spoilers all the way up to episode 48, though Philip is played from episode 28.]

Body and Appearance
1. Describe the character's height and build. Is he heavyset, thin, short, rangy?
Philip is of average height and of a fairly skinny build. His hands and fingers are fairly slim (compared to Shoutarou's at least) and he can, with the proper outfit, pass for female.

2. How old is he?
Seventeen.

3. Describe his posture. Does he carry himself well or does he slouch?
Philip has a slight tendency to hunch over, especially when he is thinking. He also has a general tendency to look uninterested, because, well, he is. About most things at least.

4. How is his health? Is he fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities?
He is of good health. His stamina is okay for general day to day things, but lacking when it comes to fighting. He spends most of his time sitting around, reading.

5. How does he move? Is he clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid?
He is fairly graceful. He knows how to dance though he has lost interest in it again. He can kick a guy in the shins, while wearing heels and a short skirt.

6. How attractive is this character physically? How does he perceive himself in the mirror?
Philip is prettier than all most of the women in this show. He barely spends any time on his appearance however; his hair is a simple brush and clip job. He does not go to a barber, but instead lets Shoutarou cut his hair. And Shoutarou makes sure he actually takes a shower rather than read 24 hours a day.

7. Describe his complexion. Dark, light, clear, scarred?
Basement dwelling pale.

8. Describe his hair: color, texture, style.
Black, fairly straight. Half of it pulled back with clips, the rest falling in his face. Shoutarou cuts it for him.

9. What color are his eyes?
Canonly, black. Fanon enjoys Cyclone green though.

10. Does the character have any other noteworthy features?
-

11. What are his chief tension centers?
-

12. What is the character's wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does he have six of the same suit?
First of, it is all Windscale. Which probably means Shoutarou either went shopping for him, or dragged him along exactly once. Philip's clothes look like they come from the women's department at Windscale and he has ten of the same outfit, just in different coordinating colours. His outfits generally consist of a long sleeved shirt with the thumbs cut out, a long sleeve-less, hooded vest over that, capri pants and boots. He tends to wear calm, earth colours, though he has been known to get away with bright pink and yellow.

13. Do his clothes fit well? Does he seem comfortable in them?
Yes and yes.

14. Does he dress the same on the job as he does in his free time? If not, what are the differences?
The job and free time are inextricably linked. He always dresses the same.

15. You knew it was coming: Boxers, briefs or commando?
Boxer-briefs, white.

Speech
1. What does this character's voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse?
Just like your avarage 17-year old.

2. How does he normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Does he talk easily, or does he hesitate?
Generally, Philip's voice is fairly flat and even. He talks loud enough to be heard, but not excessively so. His amusement is more often heard than seen. If Philip is particularly interested, he talks quicker and louder, and more animated.

3. Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any, like, you know, verbal tics?
His speech is calm and a little more stilted than you'd expect of a seventeen year old. He can toss in big words with ease. He has a few phrases that he tends to repeat.

4. What language/s does he speak, and with how much fluency?
Japanese - Fluently
English - Fluently (all information in the Gaia Library seems to be printed in English.)

Considering the fact that all the world's information is in his head, he could likely master any language (made-up ones included) within a matter of days.

5. Does he switch languages or dialects in certain situations?
-

6. Is he a good impromptu speaker, or does he have to think about his words?
Thinks about his words.

7. Is he eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change?
Eloquent. Only changes if you torture his partner or other important friends in front of him.

Mental and Emotional
1. How intelligent is this character? Is he book-smart or street-smart?
Philip is the smartest person on Earth in that all information in the world is in his head. He can access and look things up instantly. He does not immediately know things, but once he has read something he does not forget. He is not just all information, but he can also do high level mathematics from the top of his head within a moment. However due to the fact that he does not interact much with the outside world, the knowledge he has can be a little strange. He might know everything about the micro-mechanics, but doesn't know what Takoyaki is.

2. Does he think on his feet, or does he need time to deliberate?
He can think on his feet, but he normally prefers to take his time and leave the reckless things to his partner.

3. Describe the character's thought process. Is he more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical?
All logic all the way. And very practical.

4. What kind of education has the character had?
None. It is hard to have an education while your family is using you as a memory-less tool.

5. What are his areas of expertise? What, if anything, is he interested in learning more about?
He is interested in learning about everything he has not read already.

As it is, his areas of expertise include, but are not limited to:
- Micro-mechanics
- Dance (street)
- Takoyaki
- Singing/Karaoke
- Drawing
- Motorcycle maintenance
- Roulette (can instantly calculate where the ball will land using the trajectory and speed of its spin)
- Metal work (welding, shaping)

6. Is he an introvert or an extrovert?
Introvert

7. Describe the character's temperament. Is he even-tempered or does he have mood swings? Cheerful or melancholy? Laid-back or driven?
He is generally calm and not prone to mood swings. Though he gets annoyed on occasion, the times he has gotten really really angry can be counted on one hand. And they generally bring not such good tidings with them. He is generally fairly bored seeming, unless he has found something new to examine, in which case he will be driven to find out everything about said subject as quickly as he can, before losing all interest again when he knows it all.

8. How does he respond to new people or situations? Is he suspicious, relaxed, timid, enthusiastic?
He usually does not visually react. He does not care much for new people and usually hangs back, or leaves if too many new people come in at once.

9. Is he more likely to act, or to react?
React.

10. Which is his default: fight or flight?
With Shoutarou, fight
Alone, flight

11. Describe the character's sense of humor. Does he appreciate jokes? Puns? Gallows humor? Bathroom humor? Pranks?
Philip's sense of humour is very subtle and very dry. And it is also generally at Shoutarou's expense.

12. Does the character have any diagnosable mental disorders? If yes, how does he deal with them?
-

13. What moments in this character's life have defined him as a person?
There have been a few, but the most important was his meeting with Narumi Soukichi.

Back when they first met, he was still nameless and direction-less, never making any decisions. Narumi Soukichi managed to be the first person to appear in the Gaia Library where he, upon realizing this child didn't even know his name, named him Philip after Philip Marlowe and gave him the one advice that would shape Philip's life from there on out; 'Count your sins'. Philip's sin had been his inaction, --he never objected to the Gaia memory research which led to a lot of crime-- and Narumi Soukichi taught him to make his own decisions and shape his life. And part of that life is to make up for the sins committed by partnering up with Shoutarou and taking care of the dopants.

All and all, it was pretty damn influential for a five minute meeting.

14. What does he fear?
Inaction; Never obtaining the lost knowledge concerning his family; Losing the family he has built up for himself; Shoutarou's recklessness on occasion; Losing Shoutarou.

15. What are his hopes or aspirations?
Read all the knowledge in the world; Putting a stop to the Gaia Memory distribution; Finding his lost family.

16. What is something he doesn't want anyone to find out about him?
Philip has a tendency to keep any problems and concerns to himself, at least for a while. He first wants to examine them himself, before worrying others. Even if this exact behaviour is already worrying enough for his family.

Relationships
1. Describe this character's relationship with his parents.
Sonozaki Ryuubee: Philip's father. Whatever feelings Ryuubee might have had once upon a time for his family got corrupted in his research into the Gaia Memories. After Philip's death at age five, and resurrection through the True Gaia Memory, Ryuubee started using the child as a tool. He was the one that purposely erased Philip's memories of his family and used the child in his Gaia production plants. Later on, he is also the one that pushes Philip into the well he once died in already to transfer his power into Wakana (hereby killing Philip a second time).

Sonozaki Fuyumi: Philip's mother. She objected to using Philip as a pawn in the Gaia Memory Research, which led to Ryuubee torturing and scarring her face --In front of Philip's eyes, mind you-- and drove her away from the family. Fuyumi took up the moniker of Shroud to watch over her son from afar, always working on her revenge to get him back. Shroud was the one that requested Narumi Soukichi to save Philip from the Gaia Production Plant and also presumably provided him with the DoubleDriver and the Gaia Memories. She aids Double by providing them with two new gadgets, though she also tells Philip that his true partner is not Shoutarou but Terui Ryuu. Even when Philip discovers her true identity, she does not allow him to build up a relationship with her. In her final meeting with him, she tells him not to care for his blood family anymore, but rather for the one he build for himself. And that Shoutarou is his trump card.

2. Does the character have any siblings? What is/was their relationship like?
Sonozaki Saeko: Philip's eldest sister. Despite Philip's attempts to make her treasure the family bond between them, she only sees him as a tool to be used.

Sonozaki Wakana: Philip met Wakana before he knew they were a family, and was a big fan of her idol show. After helping Wakana on a case, she and Philip became fairly close, often contacting each other by phone. Wakana made Philip feel different than anyone else, a possible case of Genetic Sexual Attraction, and Philip once promised her to run away with her if she wanted to, so they could live happily. And he would have, had Wakana not been taken by her father and reminded who exactly she was. From that moment on, Wakana fell in line with the rest of the family, and Philip strove had to get her back. He was even willing to die for her, though his body's data was retrieved by Xtreme Memory. His final case, and the only request he ever made of Shoutarou was to help him bring back his sister.

3. Are there other blood relatives to whom he is close? Are there ones he can't stand?
-

4. Are there other, unrelated people whom he considers part of his family? What are his relationships with them?
Not knowing his blood family, Philip has built up his own little family consisting of Hidari Shoutarou, Narumi Akiko and Terui Ryuu. He often feels conflicted however by this family, and his idealized image of having a blood family.

5. Who is/was the character's best friend? How did they meet?
Hidari Shoutarou. Philip met Shoutarou when the latter was Narumi Soukichi's protégé who came along to save him. Philip and Shoutarou did not instantly get along, however after Narumi Soukichi's death --Who left Philip in Shoutarou's hands-- they transformed into Double for the first time, and from that moment on they have been partners.

Calling the relationship between them just best friends does not even come close to describing it. Philip and Shoutarou are partners. They live together, work together, hang out together, and basically do anything you can imagine together. They are a two-in-one Kamen Rider and a two-in-one detective. Literally even, in that they have the ability to become one; at first Philip's conciousness only transfers to Shoutarou's body, but later they actually physically and mentally become one. As you can guess, they know each other inside and out, their minds are linked whenever they wear the belt. Shoutarou was Philip's first family member, his best friend, his brother, his reason and ability for fighting, his everything, his partner.

6. Does he have other close friends?
Narumi Akiko is the chief of the Narumi Detective Agency and another member of Philip's family. He has not known her as long as Shoutarou but they became quick friends. Akiko, or Aki-chan as he calls her, is just off the wall weird enough to constantly interest him, and she is pushy enough to put herself in his life if he ever withdraws. After Shoutarou, Philip spends the most time with Akiko. He loves her as a sister.

Terui Ryuu is the final member of Philip's family. An inspector with the Fuuto Police Force and Kamen Rider Accel, they end up working together very often, from which a quiet friendship has been born. Philip is impressed by Terui Ryuu's drive for work and his eyes for detail, which often leads to very good keywords. He is however a little concerned with how reckless Terui can become when faced with the object of his revenge.

7. Does he make friends easily, or does he have trouble getting along with people?
Philip does not make friends easily. He is very introverted and stuck inside for most of the time.

8. Which does he consider more important: family or friends?
So conflicted about this. His friends have become his family, but he also still desires to know his blood family. This mostly due to having built up an idealized mental image of them, and the fact that it is something he does not know, has no way of knowing and it frustrates him.

9. Is the character single, married, divorced, widowed? Has he been married more than once?
-

10. Is he currently in a romantic relationship with someone other than a spouse?
Him and Shoutarou are partners. While not yet of the romantic sort, they are closer than Philip could ever be with any other person. And... something might be building? He loves Shoutarou, however nothing has nudged him yet to confirm exactly which type of partnership he wants of him.

11. Who was his first crush? Who is his latest?
Wakana-san. Oh the awkwardness.

12. What does he look for in a romantic partner?
Someone who makes him feel like he has not felt before.

Also, Shoutarou.

13. Does the character have children? Grandchildren? If yes, how does he relate to them? If no, does he want any?
None. And Philip does not really have any interest in that. Besides, Shoutarou is bad at having children.

14. Does he have any rivals or enemies?
Nearly all dopants; Sonozaki Family.

15. What is the character's sexual orientation? Where does he fall on the Kinsey scale?
Philip is closest to asexual. He is probably bisexual, but functionally, there is barely a trace of this.

16. How does he feel about sex? How important is it to him?
He has not yet had sex. He knows the biology behind it, but has not been pinged yet into trying it. It sounds messy.

17. What are his turn-ons? Turn-offs? Weird bedroom habits?
Unknown, unknown, and he might end up reading and researching during sex? He is also surprisingly keen on staying on control, which might be something that is not clear from his general looks and behaviour. Or perhaps that is just something reserved for his partnership with Shoutarou.

Beliefs
1. Do you know your character's astrological (zodiac of choice) sign? How well does he fit type?
Philip's birthday is unknown. He does not remember it. However Philip and Shoutarou celebrate a sort of birthday for him, in the period around Christmas which is when they first met, and Philip was given his name by Narumi Soukichi.

Philip's Chinese Zodiac is that of the Rooster. (雞 (Yin, 2nd Trine, Fixed Element Metal): Acute, neat, meticulous, organized, self-assured, decisive, conservative, critical, perfectionist, alert, zealous, practical, scientific, responsible. Can be over zealous and critical, puritanical, egotistical, abrasive, proud, opinionated, given to empty bravado.) Due to not knowing his birthday and birth-time, it is impossible to determine his inner and secret zodiac animals.

2. Is this character religious, spiritual, both, or neither? How important are these elements in his life?
Philip is a strong atheist. Not that he does not find it fascinating to research things about religions or superstitions, but he always tries to find a logical explanation for things.

3. Does this character have a personal code of morals or ethics? If so, how did that begin? What would it take to compromise it?
Count up your crimes and repent from them. Taught to him by Narumi Soukichi.

When it comes to research, Philip can be relentless and uncaring about barriers. He reads everyone's book whether he has permission or not. (The only time he did not was Sonozaki Wakana's book) He is also incredibly pushy to get his information and has gone as far as to lock two teenagers in an enclosed space hoping they'd make up and tell him what he wanted to know. If he can't know something he gets very out of it, won't sleep and does clumsy things like running face first into a door.

4. How does he regard beliefs that differ from his? Is he tolerant, intolerant, curious, indifferent?
Philip is curious about things in general unless he knows about them already. He is fairly indifferent to other people's believes, unless they cross the border into criminal or if it is the believes of people very close to him that might impact him some how. He cannot honestly understand how to believe in something unproven like gods, though he does not really make mention of this.

5. What prejudices does he hold? Are they irrational or does he have a good reason for them?
He does not believe dopants can change once they have accepted the memory. He has fairly good reason for this seeing as in all their cases there was only one dopant that willing gave away his Memory as well as the fact that the Memory slowly drive their users insane.

Daily Life
1. What is the character's financial situation? Is he rich, poor, comfortable, in debt?
What money?

Philip and Shoutarou live comfortably (though with possibly debt due to Shoutarou's tendency to do cases for free). Since Aki-chan started running the office, their financial position has improved. Philip presumably gets paid by Akiko, but he lets Shoutarou manage their money business. It is not interesting for him and he cannot go out and do the grocery shopping anyway.

2. What is his social status? Has this changed over time, and if so, how has the change affected him?
He is kind of a social outcast due to not being able to go outside. The few people who know him enjoy his presence, though it takes some getting used to. He himself said that in the past he acted like a little devil and had a hard time making friends, but Shoutarou taught him how to.

3. Where does he live? House, apartment, trailer? Is his home his castle or just a place to crash? What condition is it in? Does he share it with others?
Shoutarou and Philip live in the Narumi Detective Agency together. It is his home. Philip spends a lot of his time in the basement, researching. He sleeps there too on a couch. Though he occasionally also sleeps in Shoutarou's bed during the day.

4. Besides the basic necessities, what does he spend his money on?
What money?

The only thing he'd spend money on is research stuff, probably. Or rather, he insists Shoutarou or Aki-chan get him whatever he needs to research.

5. What does he do for a living? Is he good at it? Does he enjoy it, or would he rather be doing something else?
He is a two-in-one detective together with his partner. He is also Kamen Rider Double who protects the town of Fuuto. He doesn't get paid for the latter, and the former isn't exactly a steady source of income either. (Maybe if his partner was a bit more hardboiled) He enjoys what he does very much, and it is his way to repent for the sins he has committed. Sometimes his personal interest in research is at odds with his job however. His partner has just learned to deal with it.

6. What are his interests or hobbies? How does he spend his free time?
Research, research, research.

7. What are his eating habits? Does he skip meals, eat out, drink alcohol, avoid certain foods?
He does not cook. Shoutarou does all the cooking. He skips meals sometimes when researching unless Shoutarou crams a sandwich down his gullet. He drinks milk in the morning with his breakfast, which tends to be more western style (bread etc). He enjoys vinegar (no, seriously). He has not ever drank alcohol due to being under age. He also prefers chicken legs to chicken breasts. Also, Terui Ryuu's coffee gives him orgasms.
