World Cup Wrap-Up

And so another World Cup comes to an end. I had no dog in this fight, having no ethnic background from either France or Italy. (Well, "Standlee" and "Reynolds," my paternal and maternal family names, are probably both Norman French, but I don't identify with the French ethnically. I doubt it. I'm related to a lot of people named "Reynolds" from Sutter County -- my late uncle was the Assistant Sheriff, and I have lots of uncles and cousins in the area -- but "Reynolds" is a pretty common name, and unless the one you're familiar with is from northern Arkansas, it's likely the connection is impossibly distant.

And while it's a far less common name, I don't think I'm related to Stanford football star Norm Standlee. In fact, I've never met any Standlees beyond my close family with whom I've been able to trace a connection. My father's side of the family is far less well documented than my mother's.

When I wrote on my LiveJournal that I would be cheering for Italy, my friend Lis Carey noted that Italians touristing in Boston's North End, "were talking about the USA being the second-best place to be watching Italy advance to the final, because the USA team had been the only team able to even tie Italy."

:-)

The number of red, white, and green flags we saw tonight (and cheering we heard...two hours after the victory) as we drove to dinner was impressive (and we live north of the city).

The Italians only managed to beat the Socceroos thanks to a disputed penalty in injury time. (And because Harry was injured and couldn't play.)

What exactly is a red card? Keep in mind that my knowledge of soccer doesn't go much beyond knowing that the goalie is the only one who is allowed to touch the ball with his hands.

I blanched at the French player who seconds after getting his medal removed it while on the stage. Not sure who it was, as we were in a Mexican restaurant and I was barely paying attention, but the gesture was very emotional.

Claude Makelele, I think. The manager also took his off. I've seen that happen before.
