The Road from SMOFCon, Day 2: Amarillo TX to G/a/l/l/u/p/ Grants NM

Dec 08, 2015 21:46

Our original plan for today was to drive to Gallup, New Mexico, but for reasons described below, we cut that back to make the trip Amarillo TX to Grants NM, 356 miles per Google Maps. Our actual distance traveled was 380 miles including some detours.

So no Kevin on Monday at BASFA. I understand completely, the winter storm over the Sierras does look like a good one. Safe is smart. Email me when you are planning to come to a meeting so I can put your calendar in the car.
Meanwhile have a fun trip.

Yep, I won't be down until after the first of the year. Thank you for collecting the calendar for me; I'll get it as soon as I can.

There are also messages waiting for Lisa on Skype, but nothing urgent.

You have experience with Bay Area rush hour (much more than I do), so Albuquerque rush hour should have hardly phased you.

While I'm sure that in reality the only reason it isn't as bad now as it was 26+ years ago when I was commuting to college is the total rebuild of the Big I, my years in the Chicago area and San Diego made it seem like nothing on November 9, when I drove in both the morning and afternoon rushes on the interstates.

"Fazed," but you're right; it was hardly bad, and only lasted a few miles. OTOH, some nitwit came close to sideswiping Lisa as we tried to merge onto I-40 so he could roar up to the end of a line of stopped cars and slam on his brakes.

I have a mug on my desk right now from somewhere that serves breakfast all day in Las Vegas:). That's The Egg Works (it has a sister restaurant The Egg And I, also in Vegas). There are lots of branches in Vegas (out a bit, not on the Strip[), they are well-reviewed and we found it very good. If you want to save money, the portions are enormous and could easily be halved. Much better value than the breakfast places in the Strip hotels. I'm thrilled you might be seeing the Nevada Southern Railway! When I saw it earlier this year it seemed to have your name all over it.

Yep. It's just that every other time we've been in the area, we've been in a hurry to get on to our next stop. We'll see if we can pull it off this time, even though it means back-tracking from Las Vegas to Boulder City on Saturday.

I'm glad we checked the Egg Works/Egg and I menu before heading over there. They appear to serve spicy potatoes, and Lisa is adverse to this and would prefer unseasoned hash browns. We went to the Treasure Island breakfast buffet instead. But thanks for the recommendation anyway!

They're not actually spicy as in hot, but are definitely seasoned - I brought a jar of the seasoning home with me. Extremely good if you like that kind of thing, but not a lot of use if you don't!

Yay for tinnitus abatement, even if it was just for a while.
