Monday Runabout

I turned in my work for Day Jobbe on Monday early enough that we had a few afternoon hours available. Lisa and I noticed when we took a short walk after lunch that Wheel Fun Rentals (which rents bicycles and surreys in Seaside) was running a 2 hours for the price of 1 special. My step father, a lanky 6 footer, got a one seater trike with basket in the back for groceries. Because they lived in the hills of Santa Cruz, he got a multispeed with nice lights to help people see him. And a brightly colored flag. He loved that he could go the mile or two for light groceries and get his exercise too. And when he stopped driving (he was 90), he was already used to the trike and just stopped using the car. My mom, the young one of the couple, took over all the car driving.

I'm very glad you got to try out the surrey.

There is a vehicle called an ELF, a sort of covered 3 wheeler with an electric motor assist (the rider also pedals) and lockable trunk, that I've had my eye on for some time. I have in mind to try a test-drive sometime, but I'd have to go a couple of states over to do it. I'm not sure it would be practical for me, as most of my trips are either a couple of miles to the store and back, or 90+ miles to the nearest city and back, and this would probably come into its own in the 10-20 mile range. But I love the concept and would like to at least try it out. Pedaling is good exercise, but the motor assist would be lovely for the hills in East Tennessee, and the lockable trunk would make it the sort of thing you could run several errands in without having to schlep everything inside with you each time.

Anyway, it's a very useful piece of research to be able to give a vehicle a thorough try before you buy one.
