USA: Very Disappointing

Before the workload roof caved in on me (I'll write about that separately later), I got to watch the USA's final game in this year's World Cup this morning. Things have been too busy for me to comment on the results until now. While I'm very sorry for the USA I am happy that at least one African team is going through. I don't think they will beat Brazil, but I'd not bet against them either. This Ghana team is capable of more than most of the underdogs and more than many of the ranked teams. Still, I am torn. I really wanted the USA to do well, but for the most part they lost their chance in that first game. This result hurts US soccer. All those fools at ESPN and SI will rag them to death, and the game itself. They really needed to go further and this sets them back. On the other hand they would do better with more support. Catch 22. Sigh. Mixed blessing for a neutral like me who likes both the USA Soccer team and African football teams. I wish somehow they could both have succeeded. Italy have a great team, but if they had failed I'd have been more chuffed for the underdogs than sorry to have lost a great team. I'm hoping the USA does much better next time.

The ESPN and SI guys are going to be insufferable, precisely because in one sense they are right - it IS hard to get people excited about a poorly performing team.

Having spent years of my life rooting for the N.Y. Mets, I have no problem envisioning Ghana beating Brazil.

Okay, maybe I have to squint a little.
