Often the best or most memorable bits of a trip are the ones you didn't expect. How wonderful for ringside seats at the fireworks.

I'm happy for you all that the worst thing you've had to deal with has been torrential rains. My son-in-law and grandson, on their way to Burning Man have broken down near Reno. You were very wise to have your van so comprehensibly serviced.

My sympathies to your relatives, but it could be worse: they could have broken down on the Playa itself and be a hundred miles from the nearest repairs.

Or, why I never order fast food to go if there's anything nonstandard about my order. I've gradually pretty much stopped eating at Wendy's, once my favorite fast-food burger, since they changed the menu to make cheese the default for all burgers, because putting the cheese on after you specifically request "no cheese" is a regular feature of their service.

Nice picture down 9 Mile Hill.

I'll have to confess, as many times as I've driven into Albuquerque from the west, I never thought to detour onto old US-66.

Of course, most of the times I did it as a driver was between 1984 and 1989 when I was often returning with a car-load of scouts from a camping event out that way, and I think the last time was in 1999 when I moved back to Chicago from San Diego.

I'd expect rain in Albuquerque to be rarer than fireworks - but umbrellas are light.

I've never stopped at Jack Rabbit. Now I'm glad I haven't taken the time. The signs are cute from I-40, but I have only been mildly curious.
