house keeping

Last night, N and I sanded and re-oiled our kitchen table (which is far too large for our apartment, but whatever). I also oiled one of the boy's chairs, and will need to re-oil both the chairs soonish, since the naked pine is incredibly thirsty. After 6-7 years, I am finally running low on linseed oil ( Read more... )

RE: Walnut infusion.
It likely would but the trick would be to make sure it matches. If you know what kind of wood is underneath go and pick up a piece of it and try test patches. Also watch out for what type of finish they used on the floor as some of them will react badly is moisture gets under them. Also it is generally good to match the finish over the scratches to seal them.

If they were done in the past 20 years they are likely poly-urethane though wether they are oil or water base is another issue. waxed floors can be checked for by feel generally. you can also buy a small amount of wax remover and test it in an inconspicuous spot on the floor. Or a little ammonia will also work.

sorry to be getting back to this so late: do you think an oil infusion would work better than a water infusion?

I'm less concerned about the colours matching (old floor: colour blotchiness everywhere) as I am about the colour actually sticking.

I'm fairly certain that the seal is polyurethane rather than wax. Still don't know whether it's oil or water based. Whatever's cheaper, I'd imagine.

On the oil vs. water I really don't know. To be honest I am bad and use commercial stains except for burning wood with lye. as for the finish it could go either way. I use the water base myself as it stinks less and is easier to apply but they are about the same price in the store.
