I am particularly enamoured with her response to this comment: "Thus my daughter has the puppy and zebra costumes as well as the cute dresses. It's all about "and" rather than "or". :)"

Awesome. I'll have to bookmark that site and peruse. :)
I remember a conversation I had with a former co-worker about clothing colours. I was lamenting the lack of colour variety in baby clothes and was wondering where the reds and purples were (as an example). I was promptly informed that boys (she has a boy) cannot wear purple because it is a "girl colour". I was very stunned not only because I'm not a fan of genderizing colours but because I thought blue and pink were the only gendered colours. Poor purple! Now I fall on the side of "blue is OK for girls/boys" and "pink is not" but that is because blue is my favourite colour and I really don't like pink at all. The only pink we have for Willa is in gifted or second hand items, and even then I'm sorely tempted to dye them. :p
As for the dress issue... we will see when/if we end up with a boy one day. I don't think I'd clothe a boy in a dress unless he picked it out for himself.

I tend to agree about the dress thing; but its interesting to think about. I think I'd put a boy in a kilt with no reservations, so really whats the difference, eh?

I dressed Gavin and Connor both in pinks and pastels as well as other colors when they were little, although once again it's mostly darker colors because, like you, a lot of what they wore was second-hand. Now that Gavin's old enough to pick out his own clothes I offer him a choice, but with a few exceptions, he usually goes for the standard "boy" clothing - he'll pick dinosaurs over flowers any day. (I don't blame him. I would too.) He's shown ZERO interest in dresses.

The few things I can think of were when he picked brown sneakers with pink accents (of course I got a little grief from Frolic about them being "girl shoes"), or his black Reebok slippers with the silver-glitter accents.

My mom has utterly ridiculous rules as to what's okay for boys to wear. (For example, IIRC yellow is okay, but not if it has flowers on it as well.)
