Does A eat eggs? My mom makes herself a smoothie that includes an egg, flaxseed, and fruit (strawberry and banana). The idea of an egg in a smoothie personally makes me gag, but it does have protein. Maybe try spirulina?
Eek, I didn't know about the no-more-than-an-ounce-or-two thing -- it's been a while since I read the Sears baby bible! I have probably been giving him more of those storebought smoothies than he ought to have, because he likes them so much and it seemed like a good way to get some more calories into him. Plus, at least they're all fruit and don't have any sugar or anything... He rarely drinks anything close to the whole bottle, but it's probably more than two ounces anyway, and there have been a couple of times when he's drunk more than half a bottle. I will try to moderate it more in the future

You could add a bit of flax or hemp seed oil to the plain fruit ones. Just a tiny bit. Maybe then try a bit of protein powder and slowly increase the amount over time. V prefers drinks that are really cold so you could try blending the fruit in with some ice, and the oil, and powder and a bit of water or juice.
Yeah, I was also going to suggest starting with pureed fruit and slowly adding more ingredients that have other nutritious things in them, once he's used to liking the ones you make.
AFAIK, whole fruit smoothies are different, glycemic-wise, than fruit juice (bc of the fiber... That's probably obvious! LOL I am queen of stating the obvious!)
I do yogurt smoothies, primarily -- can A have goat milk? Goat milk yogurt is Super Yum. M also likes to add vanilla to his smoothies, I usually like chocolate!
I agree that store bought smoothies have a smoother texture than most homemade. I think that makes a difference to Remy. I have a very hit or miss track record with homemade smoothies!
