I have occasionally contemplated trying to make bread. But considering that my baking experience is still pretty limited, I should probably work my way up to it slowly. Might start with Irish soda bread or something, since that's supposed to be easier to make than most kinds.
Maybe a bike rack could go at the very back of the side yard, by the alley, while still leaving most of the space for a garden? A butterfly garden sounds really cool.
maybe someday soonish, you can come over some weekday afternoon and we can make bread together. It's SO EASY! I think the hardest part was kneading the dough for 10 minutes, but I put the timer on and squished and rolled and poked and prodded until the timer beeped. Seriously. So Easy. Like Russian-Tea-cookies-easy.
Re bike rack, if I put it close to the alley, it would take up all the sunny space. I'm opting for the very back, which would put it close to St. Clair: no windows to block and it'd be fairly camouflaged, once the garden was established.
I was thinking butterfly garden because I wanted something Useful there. And since I don't feel comfortable putting food plants out yet (maybe in Very Raised Beds someday), I thought I'd go with Native plants, which tend to be more drought tolerant... and then I thought Butterfly Garden! Useful and Pretty! Black-eyed Susans, echinacea, monarda/bee balm...
It's pretty good. Definitely worth making again, though I'm going to try to futz a bit with the temperature and baking time. The directions were quite vague: medium temperature oven for 40-50 minutes. huh? so I went with 350F for 45 minutes, which turned out a crispy crust. I'm going to try 325F for 50-55 minutes next time to see what that turns out. The bread itself is quite dense. Not my favourite, but really, for my Very First Loaf, it's FanFuckingTastic! *grins*
In terms of gardening, we just got a really need flyer through our door, about a community meeting to help with the redevelopment of 3 parks near me. The coolest one is a proposal to turn Ben Nobleman Park (across from Eg West) into a community orchard, with apple, pear, cherry and pawpaw trees! Apparently volunteers get a share of the fruit and the rest is offered to local organizations. The meeting is 7-9 PM on the 25th (this Wed); want to join us?
And we can talk about gardening in your backyard, then, too! (You have no idea how much I've been wanting to try Pawpaws, holy moly... they're supposed to taste something like mango vanilla custard *dies*)
YAY! :D I think the meeting's at Cedarvale School; we can pick you up/drop you off with the Car o'Awesome if you'd like. Also, you can get pawpaws in a lot of the stores in Caribbeantown, I think. I'll see if I can find one for you.
And yes, we will DEFINITELY talk about gardening in my backyard then. :D I am SO excited. FYI, I have the first two weeks of April off work for Passover, so maybe we can spend a day together and we can plot out the garden, including your section!
