1. Dreads take a bout 2 hours to re-wax the day after a wash and an extra long time to wash in comparison to normal hair. So the difficulty of day to day maintenance is contingent on how often you wash your hair. Recommended is about once a week. Not too bad, really

lol, thanks D! It weirds me out to purposely nattify my hair (in a cleansing/clarifying sort of way), and then NOT condition it afterwards! Ack! But I managed to purposefully get pregnant after all these years of avoiding that and that's way bigger and scarier than natty hair, so I think I can do this. ;-)
Hey no trouble. Dreads are intimidating to begin and difficult to keep looking nice if you don't know anything about them and I'm in favour of a dreadlocked world, so I'm glad to help.
jadedmyrrhmaidtalks about dreads on her LJ a lot - not sure if they are locked. Check it out - she talks about what works and what doesn't for her hair and such.
Thanks for all the info, Lexi! I appreciate it -- esp. since you have the flu. Uck!
I found the salon you mentioned before I got your response, so I totally know who you're talking about. I started the booking process with the her (Karen from knotjustdreads). It's a giftmas present. whee! If I weren't postpartum and in desperate need of a change for the better (omg, I so need to start feeling good about how I look!), I'd have friends do it, but I need faster, more reliable results at the mo.
Tell me more about how you view your dreads from a spiritual perspective. That definitely interests me.
becoming a mom really pushed me to become my truer self
I totally know what you mean by this. Utterly. I feel it too.

the practical aspects with babies/kids is what spurred me on initially. i'm soooo tired of having my hair pulled back in a bun all the time. what's the use of long hair if no one ever sees it (including me)? i was thinking that A would be able to be ok with braids, but that doesn't work for me b/c he still manages to get single strands. ouch!
the spiritual aspects you describe are beautiful. totally. very buddhist. :) thank you for sharing them with me because it helps add more dimensionality to what having dreads really means.
*straightens up, clears throat, and looks official*
Well now. One of my favourite topics! :D
Difficulty of maintenance: This depends on a few things... your hair type, how old your dreads are, and how neat you ultimately want them to look on a day-to-day basis. When it's not hair-washin' day, I do absolutely nothing to my dreads except for stick on a bandana (which hides the halo of frizzies I haven't bothered weaving in most of the time, haw). In ideal conditions (i.e., when I'm not in university), I do a round of maintenance weekly, which includes separating dreads that are trying to merge, using a crochet hook to weave in loose hair, and palm-rolling all 53 of my little buddies. It takes about an hour, and I can watch a movie while I'm doing it. No problem.
Once a year or so, I go to Neko for some professional maintenance. Her prices are really reasonable, she does a great job, and she's super cute and friendly to boot. :3

Make sure you want them before you go ahead. They're a commitment, not just any ol' hairstyle. They're itchy, they're hot (imagine having a great big wool sweater on your head in the summer, whee!), they're a bit of a pain in the ass to maintain if you want to keep them looking pristine, and a lot of people are serious assholes about them. Even still, they're an amazing experience, and I love them to bits. I've watched them grow and change over time and they've become an important part of my identity. People who don't know my name will often refer to me as Dreads!
Lots, lots, LOTS more info can be found over at the get_up_dread_up LJ community- check their memories, there's tons of info there. I'm also in dreadgrrls and naughty_knotty, which might interest you. :3 It helps a lot to see other peoples' dreads if you're deciding whether or not to get your own!
Also, you can just have me over and pick my brain sometime. :3 I like to think that I know a decent amount about these things, having had my own for four years and having started two sets for others. *grin*

I scoured the gudu memories and have looked at LOTS of different websites. I have a basic grasp of things and feel re-educated now. Thanks for that! Also, I appreciate the reality check: wool sweater in summer. yay... but fuck, dreads rock! If I can be 9 months pregnant in the insane heat of June and July, I can do dreads in the summer. Totally.
I've also started the booking process with Karen at http://www.knotjustdreads.com at Queen and Bathurst. It's a giftmas present that I'm totally going to love.
