yay for clouds!

Jun 27, 2007 12:50

There has been a yucky heatwave for the past few days (32-35*C + humidity) and a thunderstorm is supposed to come and make it all better later today. The sky has already clouded up. Yay!

Here are some things I am grateful for:

  • clouds, especially the rain-bringing sort
  • trees close to the house that provide shade
  • cross-ventilation
  • breezes
  • fans

  • sustainability, conscious consumption, environment, energy conservation

I came from the lands of central AC, it's all I ever knew for 18 years till I moved to the big smoke. :P Although I apprciated the cool on those hot days... I really did not apprciate only have to two choices.
Sweat outside or freeze inside. My dad was all about the AC, I would rather stay outside till I was done then go in and out. Made me feel like I was walkin and out of a fridge, hated it.

A little bit of air flow always makes for a more comfortable space, air that just sits is icky. People are to quick to grab for the AC these days when simply putting up blinds and a few fans can make such an impact. It's amazing how cool a room can remain if the sun is kept at bay from the start.
I have a windowless AC unit but only pull it out for the silly drippy hot just want to be able to sleep... kinda summer days. *L* The hot days are so few in regards to the rest of the year, I would rather sit in a puddle of my own sweat then look out at the world from my freezer box. :P *lol*

    lol! good on ya!

my mom was the exact opposite of your dad -- wouldn't turn the AC on until my sister and I were complaining because we couldn't sleep and the attic fan was no longer making a dent in the hideously humid heat we suffered through summer after summer (35-40* heat + 90-100% humidity on top of it, which little to no breeze). I guess because I was raised that way (for the most part), it got to where I'd say, well, I did it as a kid, why can't I do it now?

i never did (and still don't) like going from arctic indoor temps to tropical outdoor temps. it messes with my sinuses too much and makes me more miserable than if there was a bit more of a balance.

The difference in temperature between AC buildings and the outside in Maryland was always enough to give me godawful migraines...and even on the worst days I did my level damn best to avoid turning on the air in my apartment. I even had a southern exposure and windows on just that south wall there.

AC definitely sucks much more power than fans do...my landlady, H., just put in central AC for the first floor apartment. I can't begin to express how much that annoys me. The neighbours have central air, BUT THEY ALSO HAVE SOLAR PANELS. I can forgive them. Honestly, H would save herself MUCH more money if she just got the house better *insulated* instead of trying to heat/cool it as it is!! And she could get cheap, recycled denim/cotton insulation, too. But no. *sigh*
