Useless as teats on a tom cat? Rethinking the function of the male breast

I came across a really interesting article earlier this morning on male breastfeeding, which led me to other interesting articles. At first, I was completely shocked that it was possible and now I think it's pretty awesome. I'd always heard that women could lactate at will (with appropriate amounts of nipple stimulation, of course) if there was a ( Read more... )

I pitched the idea to Frolic several times while I was pregnant, but he had _zero_ interest. It's a shame, really.

ditto (pitched it to M, he basically said that the baby would be "grossed out" by his chest hair. Or some such variation.)

Maaaan, if N ever gave me that lame an excuse, I'd kick him. No hesitation.

Actually, I believe the exact phrase was "the baby would choke on my chest hair" (tho I could be wrong, my memory is NOT reliable anymore).

To be honest, it is probably somewhat true. M is very very very very hairy. I'm actually constantly finding his chest hair on things. It's a bush. (And shaving is NOT an option, the stubble would drive me insane -- been there, done that!)

I'm surprised by how much that disturbed me. My roommate wouldn't even look at it.

Still, very interesting. My nipples would work very well with that.

And this is exactly the reason why I felt compelled to post this. Few women and even fewer men realise that this is a possibility and there's such a huge, unweildy stigma attached to it that I wanted to do something to help combat it.

Some men feel the urge quite strongly but don't feel they can do anything about it because they think "what's the point? it's not like they'll get anything out of it." which isn't the case at all. I mean, it's WAY better for a man to suckle his child than to pop a pacifier in its mouth and think it's all good. If the man feels the urge to do nurse, then he should be encouraged to do so. Yeah, there *are* other ways in which a father can bond with his child, but why use that as an excuse to keep him from putting the babe to his breast ( ... )
