The Way of Kings, by Brandon Sanderson. The first book of Sanderson's I read was Mistborn, way back when, although he later achieved a bit more popularity by writing the final books of The Wheel of Time. (Which I haven't read, or rather gave up on around book six.) The Way of Kings makes it look like he saw the success of what he was doing with

Glad to hear it! There are some books where I can genuinely write "I hated that" but if I actually got to the end of something that size, there has to be some good in there somewhere...
