The Way of Kings, by Brandon Sanderson. The first book of Sanderson's I read was Mistborn, way back when, although he later achieved a bit more popularity by writing the final books of The Wheel of Time. Empire in Black and Gold, by Adrian Tchaikovsky. I honestly forget if I saw this recommended from somewhere, or just picked it up because I thought the cover was cool, or what.
