Sure, sure, everyone should dress however they want and there should be free puppies and kittens for all. But as What Not to Wear keeps hammering into us, people judge you by how you dress. I don't often wear my pentacle because I'm afraid of reactions at work or at play (so I wear my tree lady instead ( Read more... )

I wonder...... my question has always been - what's the point behind "pagan garb?" (I mean, beyond the fact that it's fun to wear renn-stuff sometimes). It has occurred to me that often it's a way of being different overtly, so that people will ask, and so on. But beyond that, there's an overarching "philosophy of garb" that so far remains fairly amorphous in the Wiccan community ( ... )

I don't pretend to understand it myself. It seems to serve no point other than to show off cleavage or make people look silly.

Now, I don't have a problem with ritual robes. It's like vestments - there's a power behind having specific clothes, specific jewelry that are only used for magickal times - I have no problem with that. Like I said, it adds power & intention to what you're doing, as opposed to jeans. But the rest? Oy.

I actually made a post on nonfluffypagans back when I read that... two, three years ago? asking why corsets had to be a part of every pagan get together. This community makes fun of everyone. EVERYONE. Sam Whatshisname that did the speech for us in '04 got trashed horribly on there. But 80% of the responses were in defense of garb. And they weren't even good reasons - just "I pay a lot for it, I want to show it off whenever possible!"

I give up.

So I'm a little unclear. Is this person talking about the average, everyday Pagan wearing corsets, etc. or are they referring to priest/esses wearing ceremonial garb for specific events, or even all the time? Because in my mind, there's a difference. Your average Christian may "dress up" to go to church, but it's not a costume. And priests and nuns, depending on the denomination, often wear their costumes all the time (by costume, I just mean specific outfit, and I'm not trying to imply they're on par with ninja turtles...). So if Pagan priest/esses are dressing up, I don't really see an issue. But if it's average Joe and Jane, well ( ... )
