Whee!

Weekend in Duck this weekend, which was very, very nice. We all laid out on the beach for a few hours on Saturday and none of us wore enough sunscreen and ended up burned as all heck. As a side note, spray on sunscreen is not to be trusted, especially in the wind. We all had stripes burned on us. My new swimsuit (a speedo from Costco!) was uber low ( Read more... )

You know, I did some yoga classes when Nora was about 6 weeks-2months and I noticed a lot of foot and ankle cramping, especially in my right foot. I actually have lots of problems with that foot that will probably need a doctor some day. Maybe some at home foot stretches or different shoes? Wish I could help. I'm having the same problem with excercise. No good time to fit it in the day.

It's apparently one of those things that you get by virtue of living in a Western society and wearing shoes that don't require a lot of foot movement - all of the muscles in your feet end up atrophying. And if you have problems with an ankle, you can roll the foot improperly in standing series instead of grounding out like you're supposed to. Unfortunately, when I asked how I could fix it, I didn't get a good answer.

In my severly lacking all the information opinion, it sounds like your instructor is a big part of the problem. I'm bad about actually showing up to my yoga class, but when I do, the instructor always makes me feel welcome. It's technically an intermediate class, but we end up with everyone from beginners on up, and she modifies any and every pose we do if an individual needs it, and usually gives couple of options depending on where you are anyway. It's just the way the class is...I probably would have completely stopped a long time ago if my teacher didn't make the class a comfortable place for everyone.

I get a lot of foot cramping, too.

I've been out of my class for the last couple of months. I feel badly about it, but in my case... not going to class gives me one night during the week where I get home before 7pm. Most nights it's around 9... Mondays 9:30. Thursdays I'm home by 4:15, but I'm teaching till 8. It's nice to have a night to catch up. I miss it... but I don't know if I should go back. The time is just so precious.

it sounds like you need a better instructor. i do a class which is a mix of yoga and pilates, and our instructor always makes sure to give options for people who need to take care of different areas, and encourages everyone to work up to the hard stuff.

About the yoga: Granted I don't know much about yoga, but is there a different kind of yoga that you can try? The only reason I ask is because I have had similar situations with my shoulder and weight lifting. I lifted one way and the shoulder was quite sore. Later, I used a different exercise to engage the same muscle and it doesn't hurt. May be you just need a different approach?

About the foot: Are there any other variables that are contributing such as: low arches, shoes that don't fit correctly, positions that are held for prolonged periods of time, or (and I'm sorry if I contribute too much to the self analysis) do other variables cause you to walk awkwardly? Or do you hold your stress in your feet. Those might be some things that can be modified so you can have a more fulfilling workout (good shoes are a biggie for me).

And as always, do what makes you happy yo!!!! Exercise should be fun!!!
