Rabble-rousing: Gas taxes and other government interventions

May 02, 2008 13:09

We've been hearing a lot about gas prices lately, including John McCain and Hilary Clinton's advocacy of a temporary repeal of the gas tax. I want to propose an alternative to that measure, and I'm not sure how to inject the idea into the broader public discourse. I think that's a great idea! I don't know if it's happening in OH or not, but out here in WA, the Public Untility District will pay for half of your insulation bill up to $1800! We're getting our sub-floor insulated (as well as possum poop free vapor barrier)

I *love* Amy's tune "Exactly" on a several levels...

The talk about lowering (or eliminating) the gas tax is, in my not-so-humble opinion, basically a bribe an incentive that politicians are offering the American voters in exchange for their votes. It does not come from a desire to stimulate the economy or to cause any kind of real change whatsoever; it's supposed to get people to the polls in November (or, in Clinton's case, even sooner) who will say, "I like this candidate because s/he cares about my difficult in paying for gas."

That being said, I think your idea is an excellent one. I don't know if the Federal Government is going to get on board, though.

i totally think its a better idea than a tax cut. I really don't get the tax cut... its just the government and our roads that will be suffering more on behalf of major cooperations. gar.

I think this sounds like a great plan. I agree that making fuel more affordable right now for people isn't the solution. In fact, I suspect people would just gas up and drive more... for awhile. I like the idea of us putting money into things that can have an impact.
