Wow.
Um, OK. That's your way of saying you don't know the tradition. ;)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mardi_Gras_Indians
And for the record, Native Americans who live in and around New Orleans by and large embrace the Indian tradition. We give "respect for respect", as it is said; we honor those who honor us.
Personally, I always consider it a sign of good luck for that day if I spot an Indian. They come through the French Quarter every now and then, posing for photos for tips; proceeds of which go straight into sewing the next suit. I always throw a couple dollars in the bucket, as thanks for the good luck.
And collectively, we LOVE our Indians here in NOLA. The tradition is a huge part of our culture.

Honey, you just HAVE to come down and visit one year! It's SO much more OMGZ in real live person. :P
Scroll up a little and click the wiki link I put in my reply to Nebris. That's a really good article. And yes; each suit is individually hand sewn, and is never reused the next year. And it's beads, and rhinestones, and feathers, and hand-stiched satin ribboning, and... whatever else they can think of. It's truly mind boggling and often brings me to tears. :P
Your weird cat-dog would love it. :P

OMG. i might definitely have to come visit some year, really. cause, dayum! and yes, the weird cat-dog would probably have her little eyes bugging out....she's all stretched out on the floor recovering from all the activity here in the house this weekend.
