I've learned a LOT from copying. The last teacher I had told us to get books of artists whose styles we admired, and copy them. I wanted to get more painterly, so I picked Cezanne and Broussard.
If you're interested at all, last winter I did a series of historical portrait copies for a Shakespeare play I was in - I painted the actor's faces instead of the actual king. They're under the "Portrait Series" tag on my LJ.

I learned how to draw anime by copying Sailor Moon colouring books, I kid you not! I need to do more copying, it's really enlightening. <3
Oooh, I like the portraits! The characters are captured really well. And you do underpainting! I tried, but it inevitably turns into a disaster, so I settle for slapping colours onto the canvas until I get the desired result. :>

What was fun during the play's run was the actors all made their portraits their Facebook pictures!

Wow, you came quite close in your painting to the original. I think I like the woman's expression in your painting better... :)
I've already decided that I'm taking drawing material with me to Italy and I'll be practicing down there. Probably an anatomy book, a manga or two, and a book on sketching... We'll see how that goes... ^___^

:> Yeah, not to sound snobby but I like my face better, too. :D
There's nothing like drawing in Italy! If you don't already have an anatomy book, I recommend Anatomy for Artists by Sarah Simblet. It has photos and drawings of skeleton and muscle and transparent pages to work it all out.

It's the only time of the year when I don't have anything else to do except read, swim, sun, read, eat, read, drink wine, read... and work on some writing and drawing.
No, I don't have a good one! I'll check that one out! Thank you.

Aww... My summer this year is going to be painful, as I need to finish my thesis and then submit it and then hopefully defend it. Work, work, work...
