How many ways can I hate Vista?

FF2 was stable for exactly one day; and then today I had the same problem. This leads me to believe that the problem isn't with Firefox, although it started shortly after I installed FF3. The blue-screen error is IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL and I also got MEMORY_MANAGEMENT once. Minidump file is full of junk and random Chinese characters ( Read more... )

Honestly, at this point, I would just do a fresh install. You'll have to download a bunch of updates all over again, not to mention SP1, but it's probably the quickest way to actually fix the problem. (I assume you've already scanned for viruses, spyware, etc.)

I had a long conversation with a techy friend last night, and ended up calling Dell Tech Support this morning. Ran a bunch of BIOS-level diagnostics; apparently it's a physical memory (RAM) issue, and they're sending me new RAM sticks. Fingers crossed!

You actually got through to Dell Tech Support? Wow. (The refund I meant to get [due to the way my laptop's shipping got completely fubared when I'd paid to have it expedited] actually never materialized, since I spent a couple of hours on the phone and then just gave up in frustration. Yuck.) Anyway, here's hoping the new RAM solves the problem!

Really? I didn't spend any time on hold at all, just had to get through the automated tree. But tech support is predefined and expected, so a different matter.

Yes, the new RAM appears to have fixed the problem. But at least on the Vostro 1500, it's amazingly difficult to install (bottom chip is easy, but the top chip requires removing the keyboard).

In the future, please sign anonymous comments with a handle of some sort, thanks.
