Is anybody out there?

I have a weird writing issue and I'm looking for some thoughts.

What do you do when a character doesn't have the right name? And keeps not having the right name? Because I've tried renaming. A couple of times.

thanks.

help, writing

I either give the character a completely ridiculous name, like say Captain Crankypants, or I put a bunch of Xs every time I have to type the name. Or, I just leave the wrong name there, and let the whole thing perc until the right name surfaces.

Right now she has her same ol' wrong name, which wouldn't be so bad but I thought I had a perfect name and it was awful, worse than the wrong name I have now.

I'm just annoyed because I finally got the right angle on the story and now this damned wrong name is sticking out something fierce. Changed the other character's name without even know his was wrong. grrr.

This probably won't work but honestly, I thought Armin had the wrong name for the longest time and then suddenly he had the right name. I don't know what it was. Maybe it was watching Attack on Titan and seeing it on a "real" person? IDK. So maybe find some way you can see the name used? Does that make any sense?

Does it not feel like her or does it not feel like a good name at all?

I keep coming back to Jayne and right now it feels like it sticks out from my 'world'. But this makes me think maybe I need to name a few more characters. Right now I only have the two. Very helpful. thank you!

Ha, I know the feeling. I have used five names (four characters and an airport named after a woman) and they're a mix of made up and real-but-rare. I don't want to use anything like Jessica or Tom because those seem too mundane compared to things like Henrik. I'm now wondering if Marguerite fits.

Personally, I think Marguerite is great with Henrik, especially as a place, building name, but I totally get what you mean.

After cold readers seems easier to me. Names are an important part of how I connect with characters so not having the right one is hard for me. Although it may be in this case that I need to not be super connected or it's the awkward connection between me and 'Jayne' that's the issue and not her name. If it's just her and me, that's kind of ok because she's not super cuddly right now.

The male character renamed himself after one of your sons actually, so thank you for that. ;)

It's a new something. Distraction more than anything right now. It's an idea I've had for a while, but shelved to work on Harlowe's story because this one had turned kind of sentimental and unrealistic. I fixed that so it's what I'm going to explore for a while. I might might post my opening in a bit with a question about it. So stay tuned. ;)
