I keep wanting to write a bunch a posts about TV and how I watch TV and what I think about it, but every time I go to start I think that I haven’t quite found the right starting point. Then the other day I realized where I needed to begin… At the beginning, right? Sort of, but not really ( Read more... )

I heart this introductory post! :D

I completely get how you and Chase could really love something but since you both loved it and are on the same wavelength you'd move on to what ifs and such. :D

So many of my conversations about books, movies, TV and music start with, 'I LOVED it! But...' Glad I'm not the only one it would seem. :D

Looking forward to whenever and whatever you post about TV. :)

YAY! (I was hoping for encouragement.)

I'm a 'fixer' so I watch, read, whatever with an eye to what I would have done differently. And it's hard because when I'm watching I'm totally in love but later almost all of my concrete thoughts come across as really critical. But I enjoy that too. hee.

I'm totally with you on TV and telling long stories. In the same way that I'd rather read a novel than a book of short stories, I'd rather watch really good TV than a movie. And I tend to write fic half just to express what I'd fix :) Look forward to your posts!

One of the truest things I wish was that TV trusted its ability to tell good long stories because I don't think it always does or is allowed to. (We'll definitely get into 'meddling' with TV shows from above.)

I prefer good TV over movies, most of the time too. I think there's a freedom in movies because you only have to sell it once instead of building and retaining and audience. (Yeah, I'm going to bitch about the TV industry. ;)

Something really telling about me is that my favorite novels are the ones where each chapter feels a bit like a short story within the bigger story.

I can totally see where you are coming from. I tend to do that as well with my friends. If we are all on the same page, our conversation is very much like yours and it sounds like criticism rather than praise.

What people don't know is that if I really don't like something I don't talk about it at all. But soemthing I enjoyed just spin sof ideas and frivolity. :D

I look forward to your TV posts! How many shows are you watching on a regular basis, by the way? (it surprised me that you were watching Fringe, since I had never seen you mention it before). And I second your TV love! I am so with you on TV being the perfect medium to tell long, complex stories with the right amount of character development. We already talked about it last week I think, but that’s the reason I love TV and prefer it to cinema any day of the week -TV makes me care about the characters, since we get to know them really well as we spend so much time with them. On the other hand, cinema (though I love it) is just a different language I guess, and movies seldom give me feelings (for instance, I am quite baffled at the Avengers phenomenon. I believe the movie is truly excellent and I wish I could fall for this fandom, but in all honesty I can’t quite get it! lol). And I also must add that, as much as I love TV, I don’t really trust TV industry much (or at all), for a bunch of reasons -I fear I’ve been severely disappointed ( ... )

I actually watch less TV than it appears because I get frustrated with all the things that bug me about TV. A big one being that first seasons tend to be really slow for me. I prefer to marathon S1 but they're so slow to get S1 out on DVD or streaming before S2 that I frequently miss things and get too far behind. I have a list of shows that I would love to catch up on (Justified and Sons of Anarchy), but I worry that I never will ( ... )

I prefer to marathon S1Yeah, I do the same. Partly because of what you say --I too tend to find first seasons slow and it usually takes me quite a while to get genuinely interested in a show--, and partly because of the long shadow of cancellation. It’s a sad reality of television viewing, but many shows get cancelled after a first season, just when I feel that I am starting to enjoy them (this is what happened to me this year with Alcatraz ( ... )

First seasons tend to be slow and repetitive because the show is trying to grow an audience. Exposition is a killer, and I would almost guarantee that if networks gave the viewers a little more credit more shows would actually gain an audience faster. I think cable shows kind of show that - short runs with DVD and download access to get new viewers up to speed ( ... )
