What a great start! Love the reasons for Mary and John choosing to become foster parents and how very protective Dean is. He's even managed to hide the real horrors he's been subjected to from the authorities.
I really enjoy picking up on the subtle differences in British and American English. :)

Interesting!
Something to be aware of, while you're still working on the fic, though, is that when kids are taken into care because abuse and neglect is suspected, that is documented first thing. So the kids would have seen a doctor and been cleaned up before placement anywhere- that's the first priority, to see to physical needs, esp. medically, so that's what they'd have been doing in the hours before arrival.
