This rant is brought to you by misogyny

Attention fanfic authors: I want you to STOP THE FOLLOWING THINGS.

1. The girl thing.
"I'm not some girl" or "like a teenage girl" or "you're totally my girlfriend" when talking to a man.
BEING A GIRL IS NOT AN INSULT, FOR CHRIST'S SAKES.
I am a girl. A woman, even. Is that bad? Would you tell me to my face that I have lesser worth than a man? No?  ( Read more... )

Okay, one #1, it always bothers me when people do that, but then you know, you already said it, some people talk that way. So I guess that's the excuse. But I don't like it. Eh. I can see pros and cons.

Numbers 2 and 3 are kinks. Although I wouldn't like them in a serious bsns fic with actual characterization, in pure smut, I like them both. (Sometimes the stuff I like in smut worries me, but I am coming to terms with the fact that stuff that I find hot in porn doesn't have to reflect on myself as a feminist.)

yeah, I know a whole bunch of people talk like this, so it's not really surprising to see it reproduced in fic. Doesn't mean I like reading about it any more.

yeah, in smut it has a place, as it is a kink, although it's not mine. I hope this didn't come off as kink shaming. I'm more annoyed at it when it's NOT in context of smut, but just thrown in casually - Jensen being a slut for coffee, is something I've seen over and over again. I'm SURE it's possible to describe Jensen's enjoyment of coffee without using terminology that is frequently used to put women in their place.

and yeah, it's hard to reconcile kinks and ideology. The way I see it, many kinks we (or I, at least) have is partially because of the taboo status, or general societal structures. That's helped me move past some of them.

Number 1 drives me batty! And yet it's so ingrained in that context of 'playful boyish teasing lolz' that I sometimes find myself writing it, then rolling my eyes hard at myself and going back to edit it out.

Relatedly, I really really hate it when people say in fic exchanges/prompts/reviews/etc '"I love it when my men act like MEN!!" I go all jaw-grindy.

it is! I mean, I get why people use it, because it conveys so much in such few words, and it is something that people say. But, so many tropes are based on sexism/racism/homophobia/ableism/etc and if we don't examine them we just reproduce all these things that we're supposedly trying to work again (at least some of us).

oh, totally! First off, they're defining what 'men' are, and what a proper man is supposed to behave like, which is pretty fucking restrictive, and a) excludes a whole bunch of people that aren't like that and b) only give masculine-identified people a very narrow frame to work within in order not to jeopardize their 'man-ness'. Secondly, it's just a symptom of how society values masculinity and those traits associated with it. I mean, when is the last time we saw a prompt that said 'I love it when my women act like women!'

In the same vein I could throw things like man up, having balls, being a pussy, etc etc. It's all a part of the same system.

sorry, got a little ranty there! :P I have a lot of feelings.
