Attention fanfic authors: I want you to STOP THE FOLLOWING THINGS.
1. The girl thing.
"I'm not some girl" or "like a teenage girl" or "you're totally my girlfriend" when talking to a man.
BEING A GIRL IS NOT AN INSULT, FOR CHRIST'S SAKES.
I am a girl. A woman, even. Is that bad? Would you tell me to my face that I have lesser worth than a man? No? then WHY THE FUCK would you tell it to me in fic that I'm supposedly reading for enjoyment?
Oh, but because I'm a girl, then it's okay, but a man is not supposed to be like one, just like a girl isn't supposed to be like a man, right?
Um, no. Because we live in a patriarchal world women are often complemented for taking on typical masculine characteristics, while men are criticised for taking on feminine ones. This is not an equal two way street. And you only keep up the stereotypes that only women are caring and only men are heartless bastards by uncritically reproducing it in your work. And that's not even TOUCHING the whole receptive vs. penetrative sex thing.
People can behave like teenagers, without stipulating that they're like teenage girls. It's not like 13 year old boys are necessarily a paragon of maturity and rational thinking.
2. The slut thing.
"slut for your cock" "slut for coffee"
just... why? WHY would you use this word. Don't tell me you're unaware of the implications and the history of this word, of controlling and shaming women's sexuality, or shaming sexuality and desire in general.
I know some people enjoy the shame and humiliation kink, or just think it's hot, and this is not aimed at that, as YKINMK.
It just gives me the creeps whenever I see it, and has made me backclick out of fic more than once.
3. The whore thing.
Basically the same as number 2. JUST. DON'T.
Yes, I know people talk like that. And that is fucked up. And doesn't mean you have to repeat it. At least not uncritically. Seriously! There are other ways to make your point. Resorting to stereotypes and misogyny is lazy, a shortcut, and sloppy writing.
I can't tell you what to write. But I can damn well tell you what I don't want to read. Misogyny is one of them.
