Bendy time! [for ki2k]

Aug 26, 2007 15:30

This happened back a few days before Kaycee and Wes are to leave, (which is about the 15th of a very bendy August!) It follows on from this thread. As she sat there, the number connecting through the dark of night, she let her head rest back against the tree trunk and waited to hear the voice she'd become very fond of hearing at least every second ( Read more... )

The vibration of the cellphone wasn't entirely unexpected, but under the circumstances it took Rak by surprise - 'Rush likewise, as her partner visibly jumped before scrambling for the phone and flipping it open.

"Jarré."

"Thank goodness!" An image of the pretty brunette appeared on his monitors. "Something's come through the Rift. In Central Park, obviously. Do you need help? I've just come from there, Kaycee was there, she saw what it was. I'm just grateful she wasn't harmed. I'm taking her home now." The words came out in a rush, his worry unchecked.

"Hey, Kitt." There may have been a second's pause until the babble stopped. "We're in the Park now, situation is mostly contained."

Another pause, and a glance exchanged with 'Rusha. "What did she see? Did it touch her?" Kitt did say that - what was it, Kaycee? - wasn't harmed, but sometimes that wasn't a cast iron guarantee.

Another, "Thank goodness!" as he realized what she'd said. "How often can we expect this sort of thing?" It was probably a rhetorical question, borne of worry.

"She said it was a vampire. While I'm not inclined to believe in superstition, I am inclined to believe Kaycee." Had it touched her? He didn't know. "Besides the obvious, what else might happen if it touched her?"

"How often? As often as it happens." Resigned to that, if not terribly pleased.

"Vampire? Well that ... sort of fits." She sounded doubtful. "There are demons out there who can infect with a touch, but we haven't seen any of those tonight."

"None of this is reassuring, Rak. Why does the vampire only 'sort of' fit? And demons?"

At this rate he was going to put Kaycee on the plane himself.

"Take it easy, Kitt." They'd made their way across the lawn and past a closed cafe and were now looking at the tracks tangled around nearby - including tires.

"I think we just missed you, here. Most of what came through were just proto-demons. Big, stupid, don't wander any further than their next meal - which was bad news for the local squirrels. This last one was smaller, and he had the sense to pick up and leave. That fits with 'vampire'. But - a vamp, just healed from some major crash damage, and he didn't rip her throat out on sight? That's odd."

"Good grief!" He'd only just left minutes before, without picking up anything other than Kaycee on his scanners. At this rate, he'd never allow Kaycee to visit the Park ever again.

"Proto-demons? Nothing like that registered." Though he hadn't been scanning for dead squirrels. "... I don't even want to think about that." He scanned Kaycee, this time not caring whether it was intrusive or not. He had to be sure she really was all right, and not just saying it.

"Well, it's a big Park, and you sound a little distracted." If they were even the sort of thing Kitt's scanners had on file. "And anyway, they're now pieces of proto-demon." She stopped a second, following 'Rusha's gaze toward a particular tree. Huh.

"Do we have a description on this vamp?"

"I'm used to the villains I encounter being of more Earthly origins, that's all." It didn't occur to him that he simply may not be able to read something like... proto-demons. "Pieces. I'm gratified to hear it."

"Hang on a moment." He'd have to ask Kaycee, maybe put her on with Rak. He'd gotten so far as 'vampire' and had stopped there.

"All part of the service."

She turned to 'Rusha while they waited; "Tell Boon to evac to home base and let Arc tidy up. We'll keep on this one before he gets too far away."

Kaycee sat listening to the conversation, a little surprised to hear of these other demons. She hadn't noticed any major disturbances - at least nothing more than normally went on in Central Park around that time. She looked at the monitor and realised Kitt had asked her for a description of the vampire.

"Well, he was a little dishevelled, his clothing was fairly messed up. But blonde hair, fairly prickly amount of anger and decidedly confused." She found she was speaking a little louder and realised it probably wasn't necessary, leaning back into the seat again. "He went into the cafe, broke the door on the deck that's out over the water, and then after I saw him he headed off in the direction of the entrance past the cafe, not the one Kitt used."

"Huh, well, he'd just tried to tunnel to China with his nose, so I suppose he would be." Rak shrugged, still studying the ground for tracks, then suddenly froze.

"The cafe. Shit. How long was he in there for?"

Kaycee blinked, not sure, never having been particularly good with time. "I... don't really know? He didn't seem to be doing any damage, or anything, and I didn't take much notice."

"Damn." Muttered, half under her breath, "If we go back we'll lose him."

Louder, through the phone to Kaycee, "Do you think he had time to feed?"

Without thinking on who, or what, it was they were talking about Kaycee frowned. "I guess he might have taken something from the fridges," she answered, sounding a little puzzled. "I don't think they keep them locked up. At least I've never really noticed locks on them when I've been in there when they're open."
