Bendy time! [for ki2k]

Aug 26, 2007 15:30

This happened back a few days before Kaycee and Wes are to leave, (which is about the 15th of a very bendy August!) It follows on from this thread. As she sat there, the number connecting through the dark of night, she let her head rest back against the tree trunk and waited to hear the voice she'd become very fond of hearing at least every second ( Read more... )

The vibration of the cellphone wasn't entirely unexpected, but under the circumstances it took Rak by surprise - 'Rush likewise, as her partner visibly jumped before scrambling for the phone and flipping it open.

"Jarré."

" ... Right." If she'd missed it, Rak was not going to go there.

Arusha touched her arm, whispering, "If he fed, they're dead."

"Yeah. Thanks, Kaycee. Kitt, we're gonna keep after this guy. How soon can you be back at the Park?"

Kaycee leaned back into the seat, something niggling at her as she tried to think how long the .... vampire! She let out an exasperated sigh at her own stupidity. "Uh, if it's any help? The cafe's closed, so I doubt the vampire had any luck finding anything to feed on in there."

"OK." Unless there was a hobo or some such using the place to sleep - but that was beside the point right now. They were moving again, faint traffic noise becoming steadily clearer.

"Weird ... " Rak's voice was distracted, more or less thinking aloud. "If he hadn't already fed, he must have been pretty restrained."

His next question was directed at Kaycee. "Is there anything else you remember about him?" The tone of this conversation was decidedly worrying.

To Rak he said, "I can be there shortly - I want to drop off Kaycee and make sure she's all right." It wasn't his first choice to return, but he knew his duty.

"He smoked?" she added, trying to remember what else she'd seen in him. She had no idea who the woman was Kitt was talking to, so didn't try and describe the energy she'd seen.

"Oh, he did say he's been in New York before, but I certainly didn't recognise his signature as being at the Park before. Not that I'd know everyone, but I've come to know most of the regulars in the Park at this time over the last three years. Haven't seen him there before."

"OK ... " Still distracted and thinking on something else.

"Kitt, we can track this guy to the edge of the Park, but if he's hit the street the trail's going to get jumbled." They'd have to ditch their weapons before going out in public, too.

"Can you keep a scanner open for any break-and-enter alarms? Particularly clothing stores or tobacconists."

"Of course. I regret not having gotten there in time to actually have been able to scan him directly - that would have helped tremendously. I'm also monitoring the police and fire bands."

They were now nearly at Kaycee's apartment, and Kitt found he was reluctant to let her out of his sight.

Pause. "Would a DNA sample help at all?"

"A DNA sample would be like finding a goldmine. But how are you going to get one if you haven't found him?"

Rak stopped, turning to look back the way they'd come. "He crash-landed in the middle of the Lawn, here, made a hell of a mess. It's possible he left a few pieces of himself behind when he got up."

"Well, duh." 'Rush could be heard off to the side, slapping her forehead. "We can get the guys down there to run a scan."

Kitt probably should have known that, but then again it was a vampire they were dealing with, and then his worry for Kaycee on top of that, so he pardoned himself for his lack of attention to detail.

This time.

"Good thinking, Rak. If I could analyze it, I'd have a baseline for future scans."

He felt slightly guilty for ignoring Kaycee in all this, but unfortunately this was what he did, what he was created for.

"Gosh, thanks, 86!" There was a definite grin behind those words. "We'll get Doc down there with a scanner, and have him relay the results to you."

Again, from the side; "Doc?"

"Yeah. And Kincaid for backup." Rak raised an eyebrow, speaking to 'Rush though Kitt would hear her clearly. "You think I'm letting Zylyn anywhere near this guy?"

... 86? Obviously, classic television references escaped him. "I'll be waiting."

Again, Rak's words weren't so much with the reassurance. Especially in wondering about Zylyn and his reaction to a vampire. If it were possible to shudder in this form, he would have.

Rak's motto - one of them, at least - was 'Fact, not tact'.

"We'll keep on the trail as best we can ... I get the feeling this vamp isn't as dangerous as he might be, but I'd rather not wait for a corpse to show up and prove me wrong."

"That would be my preference as well. Let me drop off Kaycee, and then I'll head back. I need to make sure she's all right first."

Kaycee was important to him.
