Prologue [1] [2] [3] [4] Chap. 5 - Redemption
Sulli was washing her hands and fixing her hair in Victoria’s mirror when she thought she heard a scream. Sulli froze as she flicked the wall switch, turning off Victoria’s noisy bathroom fan.
Silence.
She tried to open the bathroom door but yelped and jumped back in pain as her hand and forearm came in contact with the now burning hot doorknob and towel rack on the back of the door. She barely had time to process her mounting pain or panic before smoke started to curl up into the bathroom from the bottom of the door lapping at the hinges, bringing with it a pungent smell.
Sulli’s adrenaline kicked in, sending a rush of blood to her head and a ringing in her ears like an alarm. No longer aware of the pain in her arm, she turned on the water in the sink and the tub, and grabbed every towel and washcloth she could find, throwing them into the tub.
She cursed at her cell phone as she tried dialing 911 but couldn’t get a signal. She frantically turned the silver bracelet on her wrist until she found the little red square next to the insignia and pressed it.
Nothing.
With the water still running, she tried not to panic as she looked around for something, anything she could use. She was knocking things off of the sink in a panic when she caught her own reflection in the mirror and froze. Suddenly Sulli grabbed at reached up and ripped one of her zirconia studs out of her ear and held it up squinting at the post before jamming it into the bracelet. She saw the LED behind the square light up but barely noticed the device vibrating. She was too focused on desperately trying to pry the window across from the door open as the tiny bathroom started filling with smoke..
That’s when she saw him.
A young man, not much older than her, probably around 20 or so was staring at her from his apartment window across the alley. The smoke was making her cough and her eyes water terribly, but when she refocused she could see the reflection of large flames of a fire that now raged in the room adjacent to where she was standing. Judging from the panic-stricken look he was giving her, she was in trouble.
Big trouble.
The stinging in her eyes was much worse when she finally wrenched the window open and yelled out hoping to get his attention, but to her astonishment, he was gone. Sulli blinked a couple of times looking around desperately for him or anyone else that she could yell to for help but no one from the street could see her from the alley, or through the smoke that was now billowing out of the broken window of the room next door. She checked her phone again gasping with happiness as she saw four bars in the screen window.
She quickly sent a text to Taemin and was dialing 911 when she heard a strange whistling sound behind her and instinctively dove into the tub full of water before a backdraft blew the bathroom door off it’s hinges slamming it into into the wall and breaking the window where she had just been standing; shattering half of the tiles under the window and leaving a 4 foot gash in the wall before falling back to the floor. The bottom of the broken door was emitting a lapping flag of fire. Sulli moaned in pain as she looked down into the water to see her phone laying at the bottom of the tub. The bracelet was soaked too.
Frantically looking around her she could see that there were no flames near the bathroom door...yet. She took a deep breath before she covered herself with wet towels and began crawling out of the bathroom and through the bedroom on her hands and knees. The smoke burned her lungs as she covered her mouth and nose with a wet washcloth and lowered herself to her stomach inching along trying to stay as close to the floor and the rapidly dwindling oxygen as possible .
------
Minho had no recollection of racing down the stairs, out of his own building, down the alley and around the corner to the entrance of the other building. No one seemed to notice Minho running into the burning building either. People were all too busy either standing in the street looking up at the fire, or down the alley, dialing or taking pictures with their cell phones or trying desperately to get out of the building themselves to notice him. He didn’t even know how he was going to get to the girl. He just knew he had to save her.
This was his second chance, it was redemption in his mind.
It was strange, consciously he knew she wasn’t Yuri, the girl was only a teenager but her large frightened eyes reminded him so much of his long dead fiancé it was almost as if his subconscious had made the substitution without his consent. He unbuttoned his oxford and wrapped it around his mouth and nose ascending the stairs as fast as he could as the smoke became thicker. His eyes and throat were burning and he was gasping for breath when he got up to what he had approximated as her floor. His a-shirt was already drenched with sweat that was pouring down his back, and his legs felt heavy in his jeans as he knocked on doors, trying to find the right apartment. There was one door that was open and his eyes stung with a mixture of smoke and sweat that dripped into his eyes from his hair when he found her. If it wasn’t for her long hair peeking out from under a damp towel he would never had noticed her curled up into a ball by the door.
Unconscious.
He caught a glimpse of a burn on her right forearm and immediately wished he hadn’t as pain shot through his arm.
He didn’t have much time.
Picking her up and swinging her around onto his back in one move his long legs carried them down the the stairs two and three at a time. The rubber soles of his sneakers having melted a bit from the heat plus her added weight made his shoes stick to the granite treads as he moved, slowing him down a bit.. He could feel her heartbeat through the back of his wet t-shirt.
She was alive.
Occassionally he would tap her face awkwardly and talk to her trying to wake her gently but urgently. The pain in his right arm got worse as he rounded the last landing and his right hand almost lost its grip on her has his fingers tingled with the onset of numbness. He could see the front entrance of the building as he started to feel light-headed and he knew that he probably only had less than a minute or so.

Key watched from across the street in a crowd of shocked onlookers with mild curiosity as a tall young man pushed through the people in the street running into the building minutes ago. His curiosity piqued as he saw the tall lumbering form return with a girl on his back, struggling to make it out the door as if he was carrying a couch rather than a petite girl on his back.
As the tall young man reached the sidewalk, his knees buckled, and he had just managed to lay her on the ground safely before he collapsed unconscious right next to her. Just then an ambulance pulled up blocking his view and two young EMTs jumped out.
