What is the first thing you think of the guy in the following example?

Differences are there, but it's very difficult to separate characteristics as belonging to a gender, or merely the gender model. As much as we talk about equality, different genders are still brought up with certain gender expectations forced onto them. Something as simple as a skirt becomes a faux pas when worn by a man

The aggressive and passive models for men and women are everywhere in in media, books, etc. Of course there are exceptions, but it's like the roles of nurturer and hunter/provider; both are changing with women at work and stay at home dad, but the basic "roles" are still pretty much accepted. On a side note, it's somewhat interesting to note that while women are seen as nurturers they were for a long time not seen as fit to be doctors or nurses.

Depends on the type of nurse, perhaps. I believe midwives are traditionally a woman thing (hence the name), and men tended to be forbidden from being present during childbirth. Either way, I'm guessing women were just seen as too fragile to bear the sight of blood. They couldn't even have a shower without risking imminent peril.
