I knew who you were talking about at once, and it has been ages since I saw Crossing Jordan.

Is it his given name or did he take it on later? If it's the former, his parents were determined to make his life harder (and the lives of his teachers hell).

Apparently he was originally Mahershalalhashbaz Gilmore. :-D But people call him Ali. All according to imdb.
